Technician – Refrigeration & HVAC/R (Hussmann Corporation)

Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of refrigeration, heating, and air-conditioning systems in retail environments, operating independently with minimal supervision
- Develop first-line customer relations and identify sales opportunities
- Conduct scheduled maintenance on supermarket refrigeration systems and temperature-controlled merchandisers
- Demonstrate expert system knowledge to match customer needs with product solutions, enabling rapid and accurate diagnostics
- Manage truck inventory:
- Order, receive, bill, and maintain parts responsibly with minimal waste
- Maintain assigned vehicle per company guidelines, including routine servicing
- Keep vehicle clean and well-maintained
- Complete documentation and electronic records accurately, professionally, and in a timely manner—including hand-held device operation for invoicing
- Conduct system checks using mirror, flashlight, and conductivity testing, including:
- Installing PVC drain pipes
- Setting/triming cases
- Installing glass doors and frames
- Using temperature sensors
- Performing brazing, soldering, and coil layout adjustments
- Accurately determine pipe size, fittings, and refrigerant/oil conversions, including oil testing and electric welding
- Troubleshoot and replace thermostatic expansion valves
- Apply knowledge of pressure regulators, refrigerant flow controls, schematic diagram tracing, and brushless motor control systems
- Master advanced refrigeration concepts, including:
- Low/high-pressure oil systems
- Defrost methods (liquid, electric, desuperheated gas, etc.)
- EMS controls, parallel rack systems, and condenser startup
- CO₂ refrigeration (preferred)
- Motor types (GPM, VFD, ECM, PSC, and three-phase)
- Perform compressor diagnostics, leak repairs, and replacements
- Act as a technical resource for peers, leading HVAC/R preventive maintenance programs
- Additional responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications
Formal Education
- Required: High School Diploma or GED
- Preferred: HVAC-R Technical School Degree
Experience
- External Candidates: 7 years in the field or 5 years with a Technical School Certification
- Internal Candidates: 3 years as a Certified Technician with completion of OJT (On-the-Job Training) and Skills Assessment
Key Requirements
- Must hold a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record compliant with Fleet Policy
- Must meet physical job demands, including:
- Walking, bench/crouching, climbing, and working at high elevations
- Lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds repetitively
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, detail orientation, and motivation
- mechanical aptitude, including basic maintenance and hand-tool proficiency
- Ability to work nights/weekends as required
- Working knowledge of commercial refrigeration/HVAC preferred
- Strong leadership and business acumen
Certifications & Skills
- EPA 608 Universal Certification (mandatory)
- Superior decision-making and paperwork skills
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics (e.g., Parallex, CO₂ systems, air-cooled condensers)
