Responsibilities
This position responds to the customer’s needs for service of equipment through maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of refrigeration, heating & air-conditioning systems commonly installed in supermarkets, convenience stores, and cold storage facilities with assistance/direction from a Master or Lead Service Technician.
Responsibilities include:
- Performing prescribed, routine maintenance procedures on supermarket refrigeration systems and self-contained temperature-controlled merchandisers with direction from a Master or Lead Service Technician.
- Assisting with preventative maintenance such as compressor changes, leak searches, and coil washing under guidance.
- Continuously acquiring knowledge through on-the-job training, including new product development, service bulletins, computer-based training, and issues resolution.
- Completing necessary documents (such as work tickets and timesheets) and ensuring thorough, accurate, and timely electronic communication.
- Utilizing a hand-held computer for customer paperwork and invoicing requirements.
- Maintaining and managing truck inventory accurately, neatly, and orderily, while adhering to vehicle maintenance program guidelines.
- Using standard tools, including refrigerant recovery equipment.
- Developing and maintaining excellent customer relations with professional articulation of equipment malfunctions.
- Providing service on:
- Conventional refrigeration systems
- Parallel rack systems
- Walk-in coolers
- Other refrigeration units in supermarkets and convenience stores

Required skills:
- Basic understanding of refrigerant and oil properties, sub-cooling, superheat, psychometrics, copper-to-copper brazing, and single-phase compressor components.
- Ability to read and understand temperature and pressure charts.
- Conducting basic electrical troubleshooting and refrigeration cycle diagnostics.
- Safely handling R290 refrigerant and dry nitrogen.
- De-icing case and walk-in evaporator coils, replacing fan motors and washing condensers.
- Understanding system evacuation and charging, pump-down procedures, and defrost cycles.
Qualifications
Formal Education Requirement:
- Required: High School Diploma / GED
- Preferred: HVAC-R Technical School Degree
Minimum Years of Experience Necessary
- External Candidates: 2 years in the field OR 0 years with certification from a technical school
- Internal Candidates: 1 year as a General Laborer WITH completion of OJT & Skills Assessment
Additional Requirements:
- Must have a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record (fleet policy compliance).
- Must possess physical fitness for:
- Walking distances, bench, and crouching
- Climbing ladders, high-elevation work
- Lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds repetitively
- Excelling verbal and written communication, attention to detail, and high motivation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude including knowledge of basic maintenance and hand tools.
- Familiarity with HVAC concepts, heating, cooling, and electrical schematics.
- Availability to work nights and/or weekends as required.
- Preferred: Working knowledge of basic refrigeration or commercial refrigeration and HVAC.
- Strong leadership and business acumen.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification
- Superior decision-making skills and sharptronymity.
