Sessional Learning Support Practitioner (Sutton College)

Learning Support Practitioner (Sessional) for Counselling Courses – Levels 1, 2, and 3

Basis

  • Target Start Date: 02/07/2026
  • Duration: Multi-sessional (52 weeks per year)
  • Working Pattern:
    • Thursdays (09.30–16.15)
      • Dates: 2/7/2026 – 15/10/26
    • Tuesdays (18.30–21.30)
    • Wednesdays (18.30–21.30)
    • Thursdays (18.30–21.30)
    • Saturdays (09.30–12.30)

Grade & Salary

  • Grade: Grade 5 (SCP 13)

About the Role

To work as a Learning Support Practitioner within the Learning Support Team, providing high-quality inclusive support to learners with special educational needs, disabilities, and mental health difficulties.

The role involves supporting learners through:

  • Classroom and out-of-class assistance (1:1 and group sessions).
  • Collaborations with Curriculum Staff to ensure learning goals are achieved.
  • Equipping learners with strategies to engage effectively in their studies.
  • Tailored support across multiple levels and classes, including during exams.

There will be a focus on trail-blazing course levels 1–3 within a counselling framework, meaning the role sits within the mental health and counselling provision.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and group learning support to maximise learner engagement and achievement.
  • Work closely with tutors, managers, and stakeholders to address learning barriers.
  • Contribute to learner progress feedback systems by providing regular updates and detailed records.
  • Collaborate with subject teams to plan and deliver support aligned with learner needs.

Requirements

Essential

  • Level 2 qualifications (GCSE or equivalent) in English & Mathematics.
  • Requirement for learners in this role to achieve or demonstrate SQA Pre-entry level in Math & English. This is of essential importance due to the paper-based portfolio nature of the work.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with learners individually or within groups to foster resilience and decision-making through therapy planning and homework.
  • Must be prepared to pursue or obtain a Level 3 Qualification in Supporting Teaching & Learning within the first 12 months.

Desirable

  • A counselling or psychology qualification would be advantageous.
  • Experience in building portfolios (due to the paper-based nature of mentality assignments).
