Job Title: SfYP Employment Training Adviser
Starting Salary: £31,537 progressing to £34,434 per annum – subject to pay award Hours: 37 per week Location: Watford, Three Rivers & Hertsmere Area Contract Type: Permanent Directorate: Children’s Services
About the Team
Hertfordshire Services for Young People (SfYP) delivers:
- Informal education and youth work
- Careers education, information, advice and guidance
- Work-related learning and work experience
- Review and maintenance of Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans for young people aged 16+ (post-school) and up to 25 (Care Leavers and those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities)
Our vision? To empower young people so they can succeed, the role will help them overcome challenges, build confidence, and secure positive futures. We work with vulnerable young people—typically aged 11–17—to address emerging needs, improve life chances, and prevent escalation to more intensive services. Our focus is on ensuring a smooth transition to adulthood through tailored mentorship, training, and work experience opportunities.
About the Role
This Employment Training Adviser role is central to our mission. You will be responsible for:
Key Responsibilities
- Employment and training support – Providing 1:1 guidance, job brokering, and work-related learning activities
- Work experience and job placement coordination – working with local employers to identify and secure opportunities, then carrying out Health & Safety assessments (after training) to ensure safe placements
- Employability enhancement – Offering practical development, including CV writing, interview skills training, and career mentoring
- Direct delivery – Face-to-face engagement with young people in centres and community settings
- Networking & employer relations – Building partnerships with businesses to meet the diverse needs of our clients (e.g., سدّ الفجوات في سوق العمل lokaly anchored)
- Outreach work – Promoting vacancies and internship opportunities among our 11-25 caseload of young people not currently in education, training, or employment

About You: Essential Criteria
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Full UK driving licence with regular access to a vehicle (or willingness to travel across Hertfordshire by various means)
- Ability to work flexibly, including consolidation of caseload and contention, addressing service demands
- Fluent spoken and written English (or, for sign language speakers, an English-speaking interpreter available)
- Excellent verbal, written, and ICT skills
- Commitment to inclusive practice – understanding of stereotyping and discriminatory practice related to unemployed young people and proven experience in challenging these attitudes
- Professional relationship-building skills with young people
- Strong organisational ability, with experience balancing time across projects, anaesthetic events or activities, and administrative workloads
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment and support the wider service
About You: Desirable Criteria
Experience or evidence in the following areas will strengthen applications:
- Building relationships and networking with employers to support young people’s job placements
- Experience promoting vocational services (both face-to-face and through social media, LinkedIn, and platforms like Hertfordshire Opportunities Portal ("H.O.P."))
- Qualifications in career support, careers education (CEIAG), or related fields (e.g., youth work, educational psychology)
- Advocacy: Proven ability to negotiate effectively and advocate for young people
- Managing a varied caseload, including individual support and small group mentoring
