Senior Safety, Health, and Environmental Manager (HS2 Project)
The role will work on the HS2 project. HS2 is the UK’s new high-speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable, and frequent high-speed services.
Costain is delivering the HS2 Rail Systems Tunnel and Lineside Mechanical and Electrical Systems (M&E) works for HS2, across the HRS02 route. The scope includes the design, supply, manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance (until handover) of the tunnel and lineside M&E systems, which includes:
- Tunnel services (shafts, tunnels, and cross-passages)
- Low voltage electrical power distribution in the open route
Costain will further design, supply, install, test, and commission the tunnel ventilation systems.
About the Role
To:
- Lead the Contract SHE functions, providing SHE solutions, and enabling the Contract Leadership / Operational Teams to implement the Group SHE Management System.
- Build and maintain relationships with all stakeholders while providing an independent and objective view of SHE Performance on the Contract.
Responsibilities
- Develop and provide line management to direct reports and liaise with the wider SHE Team.
- Support and influence the Contract Leadership Team, Clients, and other Stakeholders in compliance with the Group SHE Management System and Contract Performance.
- Ensure delivery of training and coaching by competent individuals to allow the contract team to successfully implement the Group SHE Management System.
- Actively participate in the appointment and ongoing assessment of Contracts Supply Chain Contractors.
- Actively support the delivery of the annual Contract and Group SHE Objectives.
- Develop and implement a Contract SHE Assurance programme to ensure compliance with company and statutory requirements.
- Ensure all unplanned events and assurance findings are categorised, investigated, and lessons are shared in accordance with the Group SHE Management System.
- Provide timely reporting, analysis, and use of SHE data to support and influence the Contract Leadership Team, and develop and implement data-based improvement plans where required.

Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential:
- Significant SHE-related experience.
- Working towards MIEMA or CMIOSH or equivalent qualifications.
Desirable:
- Significant relevant SHE experience in a relevant industry.
- Experience managing and training others.
- CMIOSH or MIEMA certification or equivalent.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Relevant Degree or Diploma or equivalent NVQ Level 6.
Desirable:
- SHE Degree.
- Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 Line Managers tool kit or equivalent.
- Commercial awareness.
- Programme or Project management experience.
