Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality (SHEQ) Advisor (Connolly Ltd)

The Role
Reporting to our SHEQ Manager, this role is essential to promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring projects meet the highest standards, and supporting our teams in conducting work safely.
You’ll work closely with site teams, managers, and contractors, ensuring compliance, safety standards, and continuous improvement across projects—whether in the field or office.
This is a hands-on position where you’ll lead initiatives, build relationships, and foster a culture of excellence, accountability, and trust.
Responsibilities
Champion our SHEQ culture:
- Promote a positive, proactive environment around Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, and Compliance.
Ensure legal and regulatory compliance:
- Align with UK Health & Safety laws, ISO standards (9001, 14001, 45001), SSIP, and Connolly’s internal policies.
- Maintain Construction Phase Plans and safety documentation for new sites.

Conduct inspections and assessments:
- Perform regular site inspections, audits, and risk assessments to protect staff and stakeholders.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, leading investigations and reporting findings.
Educate and train:
- Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings, and SHEQ training for both internal staff and subcontractors.
- Facilitate Health & Safety inductions for new employees.
Support quality management:
- Monitor and enhance our Quality Management System and Sustainability initiatives.
- Track accident/incident data and introduce corrective actions to improve performance.
Document compliance and regulations:
- Maintain up-to-date SHEQ records, documents, and reports.
- Update environmentally focused systems, including compliance with permitting, waste management, and sustainability targets.
Databases and reporting:
- Manage SHEQ databases and provide reports to the SHEQ Manager.
- Oversee annual SSIP reassessments (e.g., ConstructionLine, CHAS, SafeContractor).
Provide bid & pre-construction support:
- Collaborate with Bid and Pre-Construction teams to insert SHEQ considerations into tenders.
Promote operational improvements:
- Identify new ways to improve safety and performance, sharing best practices.
Build relationships:
- Foster strong, positive connections with colleagues, clients, and partners to bolster trust and collaboration.
- Role-model Connolly’s core values to foster a great workplace culture.
Requirements
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- NEBOSH Certificate (minimum)
- IOSH membership (preferred)
- Environmental qualification (e.g., IEMA or equivalent) (preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to perform safety audits and review accident statistics
Key Competencies
- Comprehensive knowledge of:
- ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management)
- ISO 14001 (Environmental Management)
- ISO 9001 (Quality Management)
- SSIP compliance
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, site-intensive environment
- A hands-on, pragmatic approach to SHEQ with a focus on continuous improvement
