Shift Electrical Engineer
Shift Electrical Engineer | Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), Smethwick
Salary Banding: £32,000 - £35,000 per annum (plus shift allowance and benefits).
Equans, part of the Bouygues group, is seeking a proactive Shift Electrical Engineer to join our team at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH).
This is a full-time (40.25 hours per week) shift-based role with the following pattern:
- 2 days on (7am–7pm)
- 2 nights on (7pm–7am)
- 4 days off
About the Role
You'll operate in a reactive capacity, undertaking diagnostic repair and maintenance on complex mechanical, electrical and medical systems in compliance with legislation, standards, and university procedures. You'll work within a regulated healthcare environment, ensuring service continuity and arriving at the right solutions for our patients.
What You’ll Deliver
Throughout your shift responsibilities, you will:

Proactively respond to reactive jobs – Complete diagnostics, fault-finding, and repairs on complex systems like:
- Low-voltage electrical systems
- Access control & alarm systems
- Medical gas installations
- Nurse call systems Obtain a Competent Person status for these systems following training.

Japan (AM2, BS7671) 18th Edition accreditation (or ability to achieve it).

Handle BMS (Building Management System) alerts and commission phone calls during night shifts – As the initial point of contact:
- Assess the issue’s urgency and complexity.
- Escalate to the relevant team member and coordinate subsequent action.
- Complete and record all actions taken.
- Transfer any issues/new documentation to the Helpdesk team upon handover to maintain service continuity.

Assume the role of ‘Authorised Person’ (for higher-order tasks) after appropriate training and familiarisation.

Maintain and optimise core systems:
- Emergency lighting
- General electrics
- Fire alarms

Ensure all technical documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and compliant with processes.

Essential Qualifications
- Minimum City & Guilds Level 2 & 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline.
- AM2 (Approved Electrician’s Competent Person) or ability to achieve it post-employment.
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS7671) experience (may require coaching if seeking rotational schemes).
- Experience working in a maintenance-focused environment, ideally in healthcare settings.
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 2 years in a technical, maintenance or support role (industrial or healthcare preferred).
- Knowledge of UK healthcare legislation/environmental risk.
- Able to operate as an independent but collaborative problem solver across tools, systems, and team protocols.

Ability to pass DBS (Enhanced) Standard Police checks (essential).

Valid right-to-work status in the UK.

Ability to work away from primary HQ (travel across the site in shifts; no relocation funding).
