Shift Engineer

Shift Engineer – Data Centre Contract (Stevenage, Hertfordshire)

There's a permanent opportunity for you here as a Shift Engineer to join our team on one of our data centre contracts in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.


Main Purpose of Job (Including but not Limited to)

The M&E Shift Technician is responsible for delivering effective mechanical and electrical maintenance within a critical data centre environment. The role includes:

  • Planned and reactive maintenance
  • Fault diagnosis and operational support
  • Ensuring uptime, resilience, and compliance with safety and contractual requirements

This position is electrically biased, though the technician may also undertake cross-discipline tasks as needed.

Key expectations:

  • Providing a minimum 20 days' annual leave shift cover each year
  • Adapting duties to meet client needs and business requirements

Main Responsibilities (Including but not Limited to)

Maintenance & Operations

  • Complete planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive tasks assigned via the CAFM system (Aurora)
  • Carry out:
    • Fault finding, diagnosis, and repairs on electrical and mechanical systems
    • Operation, maintenance, and monitoring of:
      • Critical infrastructure (UPS, generators, HV/LV systems)
      • Cooling systems
      • CRAC/CRAH units, pumps, HVAC
      • BMS-controlled equipment
  • Support the Shift Lead and Supervisor in delivering contractual obligations and operational standards

Compliance & Safety

  • Follow all company safety procedures, safe systems of work, and permit-to-work requirements
  • Ensure correct use of:
    • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
    • Adherence to site-specific health & safety rules
  • Promptly report hazards, near misses, and incidents
  • Ensure work meets statutory regulations and industry best practice

Coordination & Communication

  • Escort and support subcontractors in compliance with site rules and safety procedures
  • Communicate job status, risks, and operational issues with:
    • Contract support, the shift team, and management
  • Accurately close out all jobs in Aurora, ensuring:
    • Proper documentation
    • Notes, time allocations

Client & Business Support

  • Professionally represent the engineering team to the client at all times
  • Support:
    • Operational improvements
    • Energy efficiency initiatives
    • Asset lifecycle planning
  • Adapt to changing requirements and undertake additional tasks as needed

Hours of Work

  • Continental Shift Pattern: 12-hour shifts (day and nights)

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical systems
  • Ability to support mechanical and fabric tasks when required
  • Capability to work calmly in a critical environment during incidents
  • Good communication skills for liaising with clients, colleagues, and subcontractors
  • Competence using CAFM systems (Aurora experience preferred, but training provided)
  • Strong problem-solving and diagnostic abilities
  • Understanding of:
    • Risk assessments
    • Method statements
    • Permit-to-work processes
  • Ability to work independently on shift and as part of a team

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in:
    • Data centres
    • Critical environments
    • Similar high-reliability facilities
  • PPM, reactive maintenance, and fault diagnosis on M&E equipment
  • Experience working with:
    • Subcontractors
    • External service providers
  • Shift work experience (desirable)

Qualifications

  • Essential:
    • NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds equivalent in Electrical Installation / Electrical Engineering
    • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
    • CP qualifications/appointment (LV/HV)
  • Desirable:
    • Additional mechanical qualification or experience
    • Health & Safety training such as IOSH
