This role will operate within THG Omega, a highly automated fulfilment site known for introducing new technologies and innovations across its operations.
About the Role
The Shift Engineer will provide technical support to the fulfilment operation, ensuring optimum asset reliability and performance through:
- Effective maintenance
- Continuous improvement activities
The role is responsible for:
- Maintaining plant operations
- Improving equipment availability
- Reducing downtime
- Supporting the safe dispatch of quality products
The site currently utilises a range of advanced automated systems:
- Vanderlande automation (including HDS, ADAPTO, and ASRS for storage/retrieval)
- An extensive conveyor network feeding into a Crossorter
- AutoStore (currently 100 robots, expanding to 270 robots with storage increasing from 120,000 to 240,000 bins)
- Geek+ robotic solution (consisting of ~100 autonomous mobile robots supporting fulfilment)

The Shift Engineer will:
- Maintain system reliability
- Troubleshoot faults across automation platforms
- Support continuous improvement initiatives
- Help develop one of THG’s most technologically advanced fulfilment centres
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical maintenance support for the site, resolving live issues safely and effectively
- Drive proactive fault prevention and continuous improvement activities
- Support and develop the site’s PPM programme (Preventative Maintenance)
- Conduct root cause analysis on major engineering stoppages
- Contribute to H&S, Quality, and Continuous Improvement actions
- Promote reliability-focused maintenance techniques (TPM, RCA, RCM, FMEA)
- Coach operators on site assets and ensure proper engagement
- Assist with project initiatives and workplace changes
- Maintain accurate maintenance records in the CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System)
- Ensure all engineering activities comply with food safety standards and traceability requirements
- Collaborate across departments to identify and action operational improvements
Requirements
Experience & Skills
- Minimum 3 years hands-on experience in electrical engineering
- BTEC NVQ Level 3 qualification (preferably electrically biased, with mechanical skills included) or equivalent
- HNC in Electrical Engineering (desirable)
- 17th/18th Edition Wiring Regulations (desirable for electrical diagnosis)
- Experience with PLC diagnosis and servo-motor troubleshooting
- Knowledge of electrical, electronic, mechanical, and pneumatic systems
- Strong focus on asset reliability and continuous improvement
- Strong health & safety awareness
