Shift Maintenance Operative – Fabric/Plumbing
Full-time, Permanent Shift Role | University Hospital Lewisham, London
About the Role
Equans invites experienced professionals to join our varmechancial & fabric maintenance team at University Hospital Lewisham (Ladywell, South East London). This position operates on a 4 on, 4 off shift pattern (07:00–19:00), working 42 hours per week, with competitive pay and an extensive benefits package.
As a Shift Maintenance Operative, you will:
- Maintain buildings and facilities in excellent condition.
- Execute scheduled, reactive, and urgent maintenance tasks.
- Manage workflows via Maximo and mobile devices efficiently.
- Respond to helpdesk requests and work orders—ensuring timely completion.
- Support health, safety, and regulatory compliance proactively.
Key Responsibilities
- Scheduled & Reactive Maintenance: Carry out repairs (fabric, carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical) following technical standards and safety protocols.
- Work Order Execution: Complete tasks within deadlines, documenting work accurately using Maximo software—avoiding penalties.
- Collaborative Problem-Solving: Operate independently or in a team under guidance from the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Safety Integration:
- Identify hazardous conditions and implement corrective actions immediately.
- Uphold COSHH, manual handling procedures, and general risk mitigation.
- On-Call Requirement: Participation in the on-call rota as applicable.
- Hard Services Liaison: Report maintenance conditions to building FM management.
Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven track record in fabric/plumbing maintenance within building services or a similar industry.
- Maintenance expertise including:
- Carpentry & painting/decorating.
- Basic plumbing & good working knowledge of electrical systems.
- Practical exposure to industrial or healthcare facility maintenance (preferably within a hospital/healthcare setting).
- Ability to prepare for and undertake CPR training.
- Self-driven, with industry-recognised attention to detail and safety awareness.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills—critical for coordinating with technical staff and trustees.

Desirable Knowledge
- COSHH training (Certificated Occupational Safety Health and Wellbeing).
- Water treatment and quality control experience.
- Manual handling assessments (preferably certified).

Qualifications & Certifications
- No specific degree required; practical experience and vocational training in maintenance disciplines preferred.
- Experience with building management systems (e.g., Maximo) is a plus.
