Shift Manager – Tarmac’s Cement Plant (Dunbar, Scotland)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced leader to join our team at Tarmac’s Cement Plant in Dunbar, Scotland. As Shift Manager, you will oversee the plant’s 24/7 operations, ensuring safety, efficiency, compliance with regulations, and strong team performance.

Key aspects include:

  • Managing raw material stores through to despatch under high safety standards.
  • Working primarily on day shift with flexibility for occasional night work, weekends, Bank Holidays, and on-call duties due to the plant’s continuous operation.
  • Reporting to the Production Manager and managing shift supervisors on site.

Key Responsibilities

Safety

  • Promote a safety-first culture with strict adherence to CRH 16 Rules and legal obligations.
  • Conduct regular toolbox talks and review isolation procedures.
  • Ensure risk assessments/method statements are completed and Safety Leadership Interactions (SLIs) performed.

Management, Leadership & Communication

  • Oversee 24/7 production operations, ensuring productivity and safety standards.
  • Foster teamwork while handling employee relations in line with company policies.
  • Drive the annual performance cycle and hold 1-on-1 meetings with direct reports.
  • Manage shift coverage during absences, including contractors’ coordination.
  • Develop teams and improve job performance while meeting production objectives.
  • Propose and execute training programs for operations personnel.

Operational Excellence

Decreasing Costs

  • Track plant operating costs and KPIs, reducing costs by minimising disruption, power consumption, and fuel waste.
  • Champion continuous improvement and monitor automation system controls.
  • Recommend operational changes to enhance efficiency.
  • Manage purchasing via SAP (requisitions, orders).

Increasing Productivity & Reliability

  • Coordinate breakdown interventions and preventative maintenance.
  • Collaborate with engineering/process teams to improve equipment reliability.
  • Conduct and document inspections/RCAs, addressing sensor faults and recurring issues.
  • Oversee stock management (e.g., clinker, limestone, raw materials).

Ideal Candidate Profile

The perfect fit will have:

  • Experience in a similar operational/leadership role, ideally in engineering or production.
  • Evidence of team development and a committed HSE mindset.
  • Flexibility, problem-solving skills, and a positive attitude.
  • Passion for continuous improvement in manufacturing environments.
