Shift Manager – Food Manufacturing
About the Role
We’re recruiting Shift Managers with proven experience in food manufacturing to lead our production teams across days and nights at our Skelmersdale site. This role suits:
- Experienced Shift Managers
- High-performing Team Leaders/Production Supervisors ready to step up
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a production team (typically 10–20 colleagues) to deliver daily shift performance
- Ensure full compliance with:
- Food safety
- Quality
- Hygiene
- Health & Safety (H&S) standards
- Deliver against KPIs including:
- Safety
- Output
- Waste
- Efficiency
- Labour utilisation
- Manage staffing, training, onboarding, performance, and development
- Conduct return-to-work meetings, investigations, and performance conversations
- Maintain an audit-ready environment via strong documentation and process control
- Use data to:
- Support decision-making
- Drive performance
- Identify improvements
- Support Continuous Improvement (CI) and Operational Excellence Activity (desirable but not essential)
- Liaise cross-functionally (with Quality, Engineering, Planning, HR) for smooth operations
- Promote a positive, safe, and high-performance culture on shift

Requirements
Essential (Must Have)
- Experience in food manufacturing (categories: bakery, beverages, ready meals, ingredients, confectionery, poultry, or dairy)
- Proven supervisory or managerial experience leading teams in a food production environment
- Ability to:
- Lead,
- Motivate, and
- Direct a team in a fast-paced, shift-based setting
- Strong understanding of safety, quality, and compliance requirements
- Confident communicator capable of:
- Challenging constructively
- Making real-time decisions
- Good organisational skills with a structured approach to shift execution
Desirable (Nice-to-Have)
- Experience with process equipment and production machinery
- Knowledge of CI/Lean (e.g., 5S, waste reduction, RCA (Root Cause Analysis))
- Familiarity with KPIs like:
- OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness)
- Waste
- Labour efficiency
- Experience in a high-care or high-risk environment
