Shift Manager

The Shift Manager is responsible for ensuring the effective working of their team over the course of a shift, guaranteeing achievement of KPIs, while making sure all Health & Safety and compliance measures are met and the depot operates at maximum capacity.
As a Shift Manager, you will:
- Continuously review ways of working, identify improvements, and implement them within the team.
- Be responsible for delegating tasks to your staff and setting targets/goals to keep the team on track.
- Review performance to ensure growth.
This role operates Monday–Friday (40 hours per week), covering a PM Shift from 1:30pm till 10pm.
Core Responsibilities
- Manage any failures during the day and ensure deliveries meet customer bookings.
- Plan, manage, and induct resourcing (including 3rd-party agency workers) in line with volume and budgeted costs.
- Address customer complaints swiftly to prevent negative impact on the OFL brand via social media/Trust Pilot reviews.
- Ensure vehicles comply with DVSA guidelines, Working Time Directives, tacho downloads, servicing, and tyre checks.
- Confirm that vehicle, driver, and load documentation is available and legally compliant for all journeys.
- Conduct 5 vehicle checks per week with drivers to ensure adherence to policy.
- Supervise driver regulatory compliance:
- EU/domestic drivers’ hours rules.
- Working Time Directive adherence.
- Compliance with driver licensing.
- Compliance with Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) training as applicable.
- Oversee vehicle regulatory compliance in accordance with the DVSA ‘Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness’.
- Investigate and report any vehicle/transport-related incidents promptly.
- Provide daily briefings/debriefings for team members, offering information, advice, and guidance.
- Monitor and report on daily operational supply chain performance.
- Develop and motivate teams to achieve KPIs, fostering a ‘can-do’ depot culture.
- Conduct appraisals for direct reports, identifying development opportunities.
- Assess training needs for transport/warehouse operatives to ensure regulatory compliance and ongoing professional development.
- Maintain all documentation related to training and appraisals for colleagues.
- Participate in investigation meetings where needed, collaborating closely with HR.
- State adheres to internal and external audit procedures for transport/warehouse operations, covering environmental impact, health, safety, wellbeing, and compliance.
- Identify and implement process and practice improvements.

Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated leadership—able to act as authentic, influential, and credible with exceptional interpersonal skills, enabling effectiveness in fast-paced, challenging environments across teams.
- Strong ability to collaborate and align multiple functions toward joint goals with a one-team mindset.
- Excellent time management skills, prioritising workloads efficiently.
- A diplomatic nature, resolving issues professionally and efficiently.
- Outstanding problem-solving mentality, capable of swiftly identifying alternative solutions.
- Proven experience managing teams in operations environments, ideally within furniture or logistics industries; two-person delivery operations experience is advantageous.
- Ability to develop, motivate, and train teams confidently to achieve KPIs.
- Fundamental knowledge of transport legislation.
- Fluent use of FLT counterbalance.
- A solid understanding of Health & Safety compliance in warehouse/transport settings.
