Shift Mechanical Engineer
Shift Mechanical Engineer – Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), Smethwick
Equans is seeking a Shift Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) in Smethwick. This is a full-time, shift-based role (40.25 hours per week), with a shift rota of 2 days on (7:00 AM–7:00 PM) → 2 nights on (7:00 PM–7:00 AM) → 4 days off.
On offer:
- Salary band: £32,000 – £35,000 per annum (dependent on skills and experience)

About the Role
In this position, you will:

Work on a variety of mechanical systems, including:
- Ventilation
- Pumps
- Compressors
- Boilers
- Medical gases
- Heating systems
- Domestic hot and cold-water systems

Undertake a proactive and reactive role in diagnostics, fault-finding, and repairs for complex mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with:
- Relevant standards
- Operational procedures
- Legislation and guidance

Respond to BMS alerts and phone calls during night shifts, serving as the initial point of contact and:
- Assessing the nature of issues
- Allocating tasks to the appropriate team member
- Completing necessary documentation
- Ensuring smooth record handover to the Helpdesk team upon shift change for effective service continuity

Obtain Competent Person status (following training) for systems such as:
- Specialist ventilation
- Complex water systems
- Medical gas installations

- Conduct Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) tasks across the site, adhering to the PPM programme and personal competencies.

Who Are We Looking For?
Essential:
✔ City & Guilds/NVQ Level 2 & 3 (in a relevant engineering discipline) ✔ Recognition for a relevant engineering apprenticeship (equivalent to City & Guilds Level 3+) ✔ Previous experience in a maintenance environment ✔ Passable DBS Standard check (essential)
Desirable (but not essential): ✔ Previous Competent Person/Authorised Person experience in:
- Ventilation
- Pressure systems ✔ Experience in healthcare maintenance environments
