Shovel Driver/Plant Operative
Location:
Chelmsford, Essex
Contract Type & Rate:
- Permanent, Full Time
- Salary: £29,015 per annum
- +6% flat rate allowance (£1,704.90) for weekend working
Full valid driving licence required. Material Handler and Loading Shovel Qualification desirable but not essential (training provided).
The Opportunity
This role involves managing and controlling tipping hall operations across multi-party agreements with Essex and nearby council districts. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting front-loading shovel and 360° wheeled materials handler operations to load, move, and securely transport waste.
- Inspecting and maintaining assigned plant and vehicles in line with KPIs, liaising with Site Supervisor/Operations Manager for servicing and repairs.
- Overseeing sitewide traffic management to ensure safe, contractual compliance with ticketed waste deliveries.
- Enforcing Health & Safety and Environmental policies – supervising site users to uphold regulations and training new personnel.
Key Accountabilities
- Plant Operations:
- Load/unload Recore-ed Vehicles (RCVs) and processing vehicles per Essex County Council procedures.
- Health & Safety Compliance:
- Perform pre-use equipment inspections, report defects promptly, and organise maintenance.
- Report spillages, contamination, accidents, incidents, near misses, and hazards immediately.
- Site Maintenance:
- Conduct routine cleaning, spill containment, and equipment/supply checks to prevent loss/damage.
- General Support:
- Operate weighbridges or assist with inspections/administrative tasks as required.

Who We’re Looking For
Qualifications/Training: ✔ Full valid driving licence (essential) ✔ Material Handler or Loading Shovel Qualification (desirable but not essential, as training provided).
Experience/Preferences: ✔ Familiarity with waste industry operations (desirable) ✔ Knowledge of mechanical plant safety (desirable but not essential) ✔ Verifiable experience operating plant machinery (preferably waste-related).
Skills & Attitude: ✔ Communication skills (verbal & written, including understanding instructions) ✔ Manual handling experience ✔ Self-motivated, team player and proactively 求职 (open to additional training). ✔ Ability to work outdoors in all weather with appropriate PPE.
Availability: ✔ Weekend working required (based at council waste transfer stations, may need mobility to other sites).
