Arriva TrainCare is seeking a motivated and safety-focused Depot Shunter to join our Light Maintenance team at our Crewe depot. This is a varied, hands-on role that plays a vital part in the safe and efficient movement of rail vehicles, supporting day-to-day depot operations and ensuring customer requirements are met to the highest standards.
About the Role
As a Depot Shunter, you will be responsible for controlling and directing the movement of rolling stock on and around the depot. Working closely with depot teams, train drivers, and the signal box, you will ensure all arrivals, departures, and on-site movements are carried out safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with operating procedures and safety standards.
Your day-to-day duties will include:
- Fuelling traction units
- Managing CET and water systems
- Coupling and uncoupling vehicles
- Operating hand points
- Supporting the smooth throughput of vehicles through the depot
You will operate depot protection systems, maintain excellent housekeeping standards, and ensure all tooling and equipment is used and maintained correctly. This role is safety-critical, requiring a strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards at all times. You will also complete all necessary documentation accurately and participate in training, briefings, and safety tours, supporting continuous improvement across the depot.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Controlling and directing train and vehicle movements on site
- Liaising with the signal box, TOC, and FOC drivers
- Operating and driving traction units within depot limits
- Carrying out fuelling, CET, water filling, and general shunting duties
- Maintaining depot protection systems and safe systems of work
- Supporting maintenance teams and mentoring colleagues when required
- Ensuring full compliance with company policies, procedures, and safety standards
What We’re Looking For
- A good standard of education
- Previous experience or understanding of rail vehicle maintenance and depot operations (essential)
- A strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental requirements
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Clear and confident communication skills
- A professional, positive attitude with a strong focus on customer service
- Basic IT skills and a proactive approach to learning and development
