Hybrid | Telford | Full-time, Perm | Engineering | Challenger 3 Programme

Position Overview

RBSL is working on projects to deliver training solutions for the British Army’s new Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank (MBT). Using Game Engines and 3D toolsets, we will work with CAD, complex instructional and procedural data to deliver cutting-edge interactive training solutions.

This role reports into the Simulation and Visualisation Lead.


Responsibilities

As a Simulation and Visualisation (S&V) 3D Artist, you will contribute to the design, development & integration of the Simulation and Visualisation capability:

  • Work with subject-matter experts (SMEs) and engineers to visually interpret complex mechanical systems, processes, or assembly steps
  • Import, prepare and clean CAD models for use in Unreal Engine
  • Create custom models/assets as required, employing a cost-efficient approach
  • Optimise geometry and assets to meet real-time performance requirements
  • Develop UVs, materials, and textures for the project
  • Rig mechanical and interactive models to support animations in Unreal Engine
  • Collaborate closely with the team to ensure asset integration and functionality
  • Organise and maintain asset libraries and project documentation
  • Generate exciting and professional promotional visualisations for current and future projects
  • Develop clear and readable visualisations for:
    • Training steps
    • Indicators
    • Animations
    • Guidance elements
  • Support the programming team by creating skeletal and animation setups
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of development methodology and delivery pipeline
  • Assist Customer, User, Engineering and Procurement teams in resolving design queries, problems, and conflicts
  • Schedule personal work to meet target timescales and milestones
  • Perform self-verification of tasks ensuring completeness and quality
  • Provide engineering input for:
    • Project submissions
    • Cost estimating
    • Project plans
    • Progress reports

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A degree in Computer Games Art or a relevant games discipline with post-graduate experience in a related artist role
  • Extensive experience in 3D modelling software (e.g., Blender/3DS Max), including:
    • High and low-poly modelling
    • UV unwrapping and layout
    • Rigging
    • Realistic material and texture creation (e.g., Blender/Substance Painter)
    • Animation workflows
    • Import/export pipeline management
  • Ability to identify and develop new visualisation capabilities required by the business and maintain legacy products
  • Strong communication skills – able to discuss technical solutions with non-technical colleagues
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse teams, including:
    • Different skill sets
    • Personalities
    • Work styles
    • Levels of motivation
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including:
    • Building trust
    • Finding common ground
    • Empathy
    • Developing strong relationships across customer/supplier and RBSL communities

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Unreal Engine 5, including:
    • Asset pipeline management
    • Performance optimisation
    • Material Editor and workflows
    • Lighting and rendering pipeline
    • Niagara VFX proficiency
  • Agile development experience
  • Decimation and optimisation of 3D CAD models (Pixyz)
  • Experience working with CAD data in games engines
  • Familiarity with version control systems like PlasticSCM/Perforce or Unity
  • Ability to use issues and task tracking tools like Youtrack
