Position Overview
RBSL is delivering training solutions for the British Army’s new Challenger 3 (CR3) Main Battle Tank (MBT) using Game Engines and 3D toolsets. This role involves working with CAD, complex instructional and procedural data to create cutting-edge interactive training solutions.
The position reports into the Simulation and Visualisation Lead.
What You Will Be Doing
- Ensure technical solutions meet contractual requirements while remaining cost-effective and design-relevant.
- Collaborate with subject-matter experts (SMEs) and engineers to translate complex mechanical systems, processes, and assembly steps into visual formats.
- Integrate optimised assets into Unreal Engine.
- Support the technical implementation of deliverable products.
- Bridge the gap between art, design, and programming disciplines.
- Develop professional promotional visualisations for current/future projects.
- Create clear, readable training visuals, indicator animations, and guidance elements for interactive simulations.
- Maintain organised project documentation.
- Stay updated on technical/engineering developments and apply relevant knowledge effectively.
- Assist the programming team by creating skeletal and animation setups in Unreal Engine/3D modelling software.
- Contribute to process improvements in development methodology and workflow pipelines.
- Engage with Customer, User, Engineering, and Procurement teams to resolve design queries, issues, and conflicts.
- Schedule personal tasks to meet target deadlines and milestones.
- Conduct self-verification of tasks to ensure completeness and quality.
- Provide engineering contributions to project deliverables, including:
- Cost estimating
- Project plans
- Progress reports

What Qualifications You Should Have
Essential
- Degree in Computer Games Design and Programming or a related discipline, with postgraduate experience in technical artist roles.
- Extensive expertise in Unreal Engine 5, with knowledge of:
- Asset Pipeline
- Performance Optimisation
- Material Editor & Workflows
- Custom tool creation
- Lighting and Rendering Pipeline
- Niagara VFX
- Strong proficiency in 3D modelling software (e.g., Blender/3DS Max), covering:
- High/low poly modelling
- UV unwrapping & layout
- Rigging
- Realistic material & texture creation (e.g., Blender/Substance Painter)
- Animation workflows
- Import/export pipeline management
- Ability to identify and develop new visualisation tools while maintaining legacy systems.
- Strong communication skills, capable of explaining tech solutions to non-technical teams.
- Experience working Effectively with diverse individuals across different skill sets, work styles, and motivations.
- Excellent relationship-building skills—must be empathic, adaptive, and collaborative with customers, suppliers, and RBSL teams.

Desirable
- Agile development experience.
- Experience with 3D CAD decimation and optimisation (e.g., Pixyz).
- Knowledge of CAD data workflows in game engines.
- Familiarity with:
- PlasticSCM/version control
- Youtrack for issue tracking.
