Senior Nurse – Sister/Charge Nurse (Band 6), Cancer Care (Outpatients), Hamwic House
Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites enthusiastic and motivated senior nurses to join its management team in a full-time role as Sister/Charge Nurse at Hamwic House, with a 1-year maternity cover secondment opportunity.
Hamwic House is a high-volume outpatient department serving adult cancer patients, offering:
- SACT (Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies)
- Blood product transfusions
- Supportive therapies
- Phlebotomy & PICC insertions
- Oncology outpatient clinics
The ideal candidate must be qualified and experienced in SACT administration.
About the Role
The Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse will report to a Band 7 and support the management of nursing teams, including:
- Staff nurses
- Healthcare assistants
- Housekeepers
Key Responsibilities
- Team leadership: Oversee annual IPRs (Individual Performance Reviews), manage sickness, performance, and development opportunities.
- Operational oversight: Ensure safe staffing levels and smooth unit workflows.
- Interdepartmental coordination: Collaborate with pharmacy and SACT coordination teams.
- Clinical support: Mentor junior team members in complex situations.
- Flexible support: Act as bleep holder for cancer care wards, providing additional assistance to SACT-administration needs across outpatients and wards.
- Complaints & challenge management: Handle complaints with empathy, professionalism, and effective escalation.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Essential Criteria
- Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
- Registered on the appropriate part of the nursing register
- Significant post-registration experience in a relevant speciality
- Ward management experience in an acute hospital setting
- Evidence of:
- Managing learners in clinical practice
- Supporting colleagues to foster effective learning
- Demonstrated clinical decision-making and judgement
- Commitment to CPPD (Continuing Professional & Personal Development)
Desirable Criteria
- Experience in adverse event management & complaints handling
- Skills in appraisals or acting as Practice Assessors
- Basic budget awareness
Skills

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Strong communication, delegation, and leadership
- Problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience under pressure
- Time management, prioritisation & working efficiently
