Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a full-time position (plus 1-year maternity secondment) as a Sister/Charge Nurse in the Hamwic House Outpatient Department, one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in the UK.
This opportunity is ideal for an enthusiastic, motivated senior nurse eager to join a dynamic management team supporting cancer patients—including those undergoing SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapies), blood product transfusions, and advanced therapies such as PICC insertions.
About the Role
You will act as the senior clinical lead for Hamwic House, a busy outpatient department specialising in:
- Adult cancer treatment & supportive therapies
- SACT administration
- SACT coordination
- Phlebotomy & CVAD management
- PICC line insertions
- Oncology outpatient clinics
A key element of the role involves a 1-year secondment to support maternity leave, ensuring continuity of care.
Key Responsibilities
Defining the core duties(including secondment requirements):
- Lead wandering ward rounds and ensure comprehensive bleep cover for cancer pathways, managing urgent clinical timelines.
- Act as cancer care bleep holder for Band 6 staffing levels, supporting other units when required.
- Oversee daily team coordination, ensuring safe staffing levels and effective communication between nurses, pharmacy, and SACT teams.
- Resolve complex patient care challenges with empathy, professionalism, and adherence to clinical protocols.
- Triage urgent issues under pressure while remaining compassionate and solution-focused.
- Mentor junior team members, fostering professional development.
- Manage outpatient scheduling, oversee staffing performance, and contribute to interpersonal review system (IPRS).
- Lead initiatives to improve workflow, patient safety, and quality care.

Key expectations:

Key Requirements
Qualifications & Knowledge
✅ Essential
- Qualified Nurse (Completion of Degree/Diploma, GNM/NMC eligibility).
- Registered nurse per UK [Nursing Standards].
- ≥3-year acute specialty experience, with competence in:
- SACT (treatment administration)
- Cascular access (IV Pompe & IV therapy)
- CVAD care & blood product administration.
- Ward/team management experience (e.g., supervision).
- Evidence of training peer-educating medical staff.
- commitment to continuing PDG (e.g.: Enhanced Practice roles, Grade 7 attempts).
✅ Desirable
- Audit member with prior experience in teaching junior nurses.
- Experience doing budget oversight of departments.
