Description
The Site Civil Engineer is responsible for the on-site delivery and coordination of civil engineering works ensuring that civil structures, earthworks, drainage, and associated infrastructure are delivered safely, to programme, to quality standards, and in compliance with design specifications and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities - Civil Engineering Delivery
- Supervise and inspect civil works including earthworks, foundations, drainage, retaining structures, concrete and steel structures, and associated civil infrastructure.
- Review and interpret civil engineering drawings, specifications, method statements, and construction programmes.
- Support setting out and verification of civil works on site.
- Identify, report, and help resolve technical issues, non-conformances, or design discrepancies.
Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality & Compliance
- Promote and enforce safe systems of work, including risk assessments and method statements.
- Monitor site safety compliance and environmental controls for civil works.
- Participate in safety inspections, audits, and toolbox talks.
- Ensure all civil works meet design, quality, and regulatory standards.
- Assist in testing, inspections, and approvals of civil works.
- Maintain accurate site records, including daily logs, inspection reports, and as-built documentation.

- Liaise with project managers, site managers, and design teams to support project delivery.
- Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure civil works are delivered according to programme and specification.
- Support commissioning and handover of civil infrastructure.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers or site staff.
- Support lessons learned initiatives and promote best practice in civil engineering delivery.
- Assist in improving processes, standards, and site procedures.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
- Site safety certification, e.g., CSCS (or willingness to obtain)
- Practical site-based civil engineering experience, including earthworks, drainage, foundations, structures, and setting out skills.
- Experience reading and interpreting civil engineering drawings, specifications, and method statements
- Experience coordinating and supervising subcontractors and site teams
- Experience working to health, safety, quality, and environmental standards on site

Desirable
- NVQ, Degree, HNC, or HND in Civil Engineering, Construction, or related discipline
- Formal training in site management or construction supervision
- Familiarity with water and energy sector standards and regulatory requirements
- Experience in water, wastewater, or energy infrastructure projects
- Experience supporting commissioning, testing, or handover of civil works
- Experience liaising with clients, regulators, or third-party inspectors
- Experience mentoring junior engineers or site staff
