Business Department: Bethell Construction Area: Greater Manchester Positions Available: 2

Job Summary

Take responsibility for setting-out the works in accordance with contract drawings/specifications, ensuring all constructed works accurately reflect the intended dimensions. Verify construction progress and collaborate with partners, sub-contractors, operatives, and professionals to deliver cost-efficient outcomes while maintaining alignment with drawings/specifications.


Principal Accountabilities

SAFETY

  • Adhere to all site safety rules and engage with site management to ensure safe working environments.
  • Ensure all operations under your responsibility prioritise safety for visitors, staff, and yourself.
  • Assist in daily H&S briefings, toolbox talks, and site inductions as required.
  • Provide input to Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) as directed.
  • Investigate and report near misses, environmental incidents, and customer complaints promptly (up to Board level).
  • Conduct site safety inspections (as agreed) and forward reports to the HSQE Dept timely.

CUSTOMER

  • Represent Bethell professionally, maintaining a professional attitude toward clients.
  • Keep the site organised, clean, and tidy to project a positive image of the company.
  • Align works strictly with client requirements, ensuring compliance through diligent project delivery.
  • Record all client communications (e.g., Confirmation of Verbal Instructions (CVIs), Technical Queries (TQs)) in the correct CDE.

PEOPLE

  • Cultivate respect among the workforce and motivate high morale.
  • Manage site personnel in collaboration with your line manager to drive efficiency and site objectives.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, approving their work to meet precise dimensional standards.
  • Collaborate closely with the commercial team to document deviations from contract drawings, including sketches/photos, and submit records to the Quantity Surveyor promptly.
  • Assist in apprentice/graduate development.

INTEGRITY

  • Conduct regular inspections to maintain quality standards and ensure proper documentation.
  • Report and resolve non-compliance issues with senior management promptly.
  • Execute timely setting-out work, preventing delays by equipping trades with accurate information.
  • Ensure safe handling/storage of surveying instruments and regular calibration/maintenance.
  • Collect as-built information and prepare as-constructed drawings as needed.
  • Verify key setting-out points for accuracy.
  • Produce material take-off quantities, ensuring accurate material requisitions.
  • Maintain setting-out records, level books, and field books until project completion.
  • Oversee concrete test cube manufacture/storage with full audit trails.
  • Develop ITP plans, coordinate hold points, and issue correct documentation.
  • Assist in compiling as-built drawings and Health & Safety files.

SUSTAINABLE

  • Minimise material wasteage by ensuring work aligns with setting-out requirements.
  • Promote recycling/reuse of materials where viable.
  • Implement measures to reduce nuisance impact and protect the environment.
  • Ensure adherence to Environmental Management measures.

EXCELLENCE

  • Set out baselines, offsets, and all necessary reference points to support precise construction.
  • Monitor ongoing works to maintain acceptable tolerances per contract drawings.
  • Verify material deliveries meet specifications and maintain relevant project Quality Plan data.
  • Record works (including sketches/photos) to document progress and compliance.
  • Implement agreed quality measures (e.g., pre-pour inspections, dip sheets, drainage data).
  • Update drawings and documentation as required for accurate project execution.
  • Ensure zero-defect completion through inspections and corrective actions.
  • Conduct pre-completion quality inspections.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

  • CSCS accreditation
  • SMSTS (5-day accreditation) (preferable)
  • Minimum 3-day first aid certification
  • Relevant work experience: Excavation, groundworks, concreting, drainage, and highways
  • Full clean driving licence
  • ONC/HNC/HND/Degree in construction-related fields (preferable)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Proficient in construction industry standards across trade disciplines.
  • Strong grasp of CDM regulations.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, internet, and email management.
  • Competent in safe working practices and basic H&S requirements.
  • Demonstrable leadership, planning, and organisational abilities.
  • Ability to compare works with contract drawings.
  • Results-driven, analytical, with problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent planner/organiser with strong time management.
  • Persuasive communicator with clear written/verbal skills.
  • Aligns actions with Company Image and promotes the Bethell brand.
