Site Engineering Director – Kemsley Paper Mill (Onsite)

DS Smith Paper is seeking an outstanding Engineering Director to lead the Engineering and Maintenance function at our Kemsley Paper Mill. As a key member of the Site Leadership Team, you will shape and deliver our engineering strategy, drive asset reliability, and lead a high-performing team across mechanical, electrical, and automation disciplines. This role is ideal for a strategic engineering leader who excels in people management, long-term planning, and operational reliability.

About the Role

This role involves:

  • Defining and implementing a site-wide engineering strategy that continuously improves reliability, reduces unplanned downtime, and modernises engineering support for the mill.
  • Leading a team of around 67 engineers, managing a substantial £21m R&M budget, and designing the future structure, roles, systems, and processes of the Engineering function over the next 2–3 years and beyond.
  • Ensuring accountability for engineering standards, maintenance excellence, asset management, statutory compliance, supplier relationships, and long-term investment planning.
  • Measuring success through reducing unplanned engineering downtime across all major assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Leadership

    • Lead and role-model a strong safety culture, ensuring all engineering work is conducted safely in line with risk assessments and legal requirements.
  • Team Management & Development

    • Build the right team structure and ensure engineers are trained, competent, and fully compliant.
    • Recruit, develop, and motivate a team of ~67 engineers, focusing on performance, capability building, and succession planning.
    • Set and monitor KPIs that drive departmental performance and positive behaviours.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
