Site Maintenance Engineer

Pay Range: £23,400 - £38,550 Placement within the salary range will vary depending on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and internal equity considerations. Role Purpose The Site Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the hands-on delivery of planned and reactive maintenance activities across the Bristol sites, ensuring buildings, utilities, plant, and equipment are maintained in a safe, compliant, and operationally effective condition. Working under the direction of the Facilities & Engineering Manager, the role supports business continuity by maintaining GMP, EHS, and quality standards across laboratories, cleanrooms, plant rooms, offices and external areas. The post holder will take a proactive approach to identifying defects, resolving issues, supporting contractors, and maintaining accurate maintenance and compliance records. Key Responsibilities Operational & Maintenance Responsibilities Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on building fabric, utilities, plant, and site infrastructure. Ensure the upkeep of laboratories, cleanrooms, plant rooms, offices, and external areas to GMP and EHS standards. Respond promptly to maintenance faults, breakdowns, or safety issues, escalating where required. Complete routine site inspections and report defects, risks, or improvement opportunities. Propose and present cost saving initiatives to reduce expenditure when applicable. Support the laboratories through stock replenishment, waste removal, equipment maintenance and calibration, and cleaning of GMP/AM areas etc. Compliance, Health & Safety and GMP Work in accordance with QMS, site SOPs, GMP requirements, risk assessments, and permits to work. Identify defects or risks and escalate appropriately to prevent operational disruption. Ensure all maintenance activities are completed safely and documented accurately. Lead fire safety systems checks, emergency equipment inspections, and statutory testing. Collaborate with Lab EHS Manager to support COSHH compliance, safe storage of materials, and waste handling. Immediately report hazards, incidents, or near misses and support corrective actions. Contractor & Service Support Manage, co-ordinate and supervise contractors on site, ensuring compliance with induction, permits, and safe systems of work. Act as a point of contact for service engineers during visits, escalating issues as required. Verify completion of contracted works and report any quality or safety concerns. Security, On-Call & Business Continuity Act as a site key holder. Support business continuity by assisting with restoration of essential services. Participate in the facilities on-call rota, responding to alarms or critical site issues. On-call cover will be provided on a planned rota basis, communicated in advance by the Facilities & Engineering Manager. The on-call engineer must be contactable during their on-call period and able to respond to critical alarms or incidents, including refrigeration, security, fire, or essential building services. Initial response to an on-call alert is expected within the defined SOP response time, with site attendance required where remote resolution is not possible. Where site attendance is required, the engineer must attend site as soon as reasonably practicable and act in accordance with lone working and site attendance procedures. All call-outs, actions taken, and outcomes must be recorded in accordance with maintenance and incident reporting procedures. On-call allowances and call-out payments will be applied in line with company policy and local agreements. Stakeholder & Collaboration Communicate clearly with site users regarding maintenance activities, access requirements, or disruptions. Contribute to a positive, service-focused facilities and maintenance culture. Person Specification Essential >2 years’ experience in a maintenance or engineering role within a laboratory, GMP, manufacturing, or regulated environment. Experience supporting contractors or service engineers. Practical knowledge of building maintenance, plant, or utilities. Strong awareness of health & safety and safe systems of work. Ability to follow procedures and maintain accurate records. Good organisational skills and a proactive, problem-solving approach. Effective communicator with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Desirable Relevant technical qualification (e.g. NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent). Experience working in GMP or ISO-regulated environments. IOSH Working Safely or equivalent health & safety training. Multi-skilled background (mechanical, electrical, or building services). Additional Information The Site Maintenance Engineer is expected to take ownership of day-to-day maintenance activities and contribute to the continuous improvement of site safety, compliance, and reliability.
