EHS Site Process Safety Engineer (On-site Role)
Location: Brimsdown (Enfield) - UK
The position is a site-based role
At Johnson Matthey, your work will matter. As a EHS Site Process Safety Engineer, you’ll join a world leader in platinum group metals with over 200 years of history. Using advanced metals chemistry, you’ll help tackle the world’s biggest challenges – cutting emissions, powering modern life and supporting life‑saving technologies – by applying, refining and recycling metals that matter for a healthier, more sustainable, circular future.
The role:
As a EHS Site Process Safety Engineer, you will help drive our goals by:
Supporting delivery of the Process Safety Management (PSM) strategy at the Brimsdown site, working closely with site leadership and the wider EHS team. Ensuring compliance with COMAH regulations, local process safety legislation and Johnson Matthey process safety policies and standards. Leading and supporting process safety risk assessments, including HAZOP, bowtie development, LOPA and management of change activities. Investigating process safety incidents and near misses, providing clear analysis and practical recommendations to prevent recurrence. Verifying that risk reduction and mitigation actions are effectively implemented through audits and assurance activities. Providing process safety expertise, guidance and training to employees and contractors to strengthen site-wide PSM capability.
Key skills that will help you succeed in this role:
A relevant engineering degree (such as chemical, mechanical or EC&I) with experience in a process or manufacturing environment. Strong working knowledge of process safety management systems and regulatory frameworks, ideally within a COMAH site. Experience leading or facilitating process safety risk assessments and management of change processes. The ability to analyse complex technical issues and present clear, practical recommendations to a range of stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence engaging at all levels of the organisation. A collaborative, proactive approach with high attention to detail and a strong commitment to safe operations.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
