SJFHQ Military Secretariat Manager
MS/H&A Manager – Standing Joint Force HQ (SJFHQ) Group
About the Role
The MS/H&A Manager plays a critical part in the Central Staff of Standing Joint Force HQ (SJFHQ) Group, supporting the combined operations of its three Headquarters. This role is accountable for:
- Managing admin process and setting group policy in Military Service (MS) and Household Awards (H&A)
- Providing advice and support to staff dealing with Service-specific reporting in joint contexts
- Overseeing military appraisal processes for all military personnel within the Group
- Ensuring compliance with Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) systems for raising, monitoring, and reviewing appraisal processes
- Handling Honours & Awards (H&A) processes for King’s Birthday and New Year’s Honours, including operational citations for deployed service
This is a 37-hour per week position. Part-time/work share arrangements are possible subject to coverage requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Military Appraisal Leadership
- End-to-end management of appraisal processes (e.g., Serviceperson Joint Appraisal Report (SJAR) & Officer Joint Appraisal Report (OJAR))
- Monitoring promotion and command board results (across Navy, Army, and Royal Air Force)
- Implementing timely reporting systems for officers with overdue appraisals, ensuring accountability
- Quality review of completed appraisals for compliance, clarity, and joint policy alignment
- Training and resource development to improve joint environment reporting for staff

Honours & Awards Leadership
- Administered process for both King’s Birthday and New Year’s Honours, meeting timelines (HLB/TLB)
- managing operational citations (e.g., citations for deployed personnel).
- Developing and advising on H&A policies, including implications for SFC and commanders
- Monitoring H&A cycles and providing continuous updates to leadership
Administrative & Operational Support
- Supporting the Rear Operating Group (ROG) with admin functions for deployed elements
- Continuing business-as-usual activity – even when HQ is deployed (e.g., UK-based servicing)
- Upskilling in mod-related digital systems via learning & development opportunities
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel & PowerPoint (ermanipulation and reporting)
- High attention to detail for policy adherence and compliance
- Excellent communication skills – writing succinct reports, liaising with diverse stakeholders
- Ability to organise, prioritise multitasking whilst maintaining accuracy
Desirable Experience
- Familiarity with MODnet systems
- Commitment to learning and adapting to change under pressure
- Experience working autonomously and in collaborative teams

Selection Process

Working Arrangements
- 37 hours/week (standard flexible roles may accommodate part-time if whole hours covered)
- *Mixed onsite/home work – Mandatory 60% in office minimum
