Skills Coach – Supported Internship Programme (Kingston-upon-Thames)
Do you have experience of working with people with a learning disability? Are you passionate about driving change?
If so, we may have the perfect role for you within our Supported Internship team on a full-time basis (37.5 hours per week).
About the Role
The Skills Coach role is central to delivering our Mencap Training Academy Supported Internship programme in Kingston-upon-Thames. You will support learners with SEN (Special Educational Needs)—including mild to moderate learning disabilities—to achieve the skills required for paid employment.
As a Skills Coach, your key responsibilities include:
- Providing tailored support to help young adults progress towards sustained paid employment.
- Offering 1:1 job coaching and teaching employability skills in a classroom environment.
- Integrating English and Maths learning into the workplace to meet programme requirements.
This role is based in our community workspace, working closely with learners to shape their development.
Responsibilities
✅ Ensure learner progression—supporting young adults to achieve the skills needed for paid employment.
✅ Deliver tailored workplace coaching, including:
- One-to-one job training
- Group-based employability skills development
- Application of English & Maths in real work settings

✅ Embed inclusive practices to meet programme objectives.
✅ Maintain effective record-keeping and report progress as required.
✅ Work collaboratively with colleagues and employers to facilitate successful transitions.
Requirements
Essential:
✔ Experience of supporting people, especially those with learning disabilities. ✔ Experience of delivering against targets and meeting deadlines. ✔ Knowledge of safe working practices in a training or community setting. ✔ Basic understanding of employability & disability employment processes.
✔ GCSE C/4 or above (or equivalent) in English & Maths (proof required at interview stage). ✔ Good IT skills (e.g., familiar with word processing, spreadsheets, and digital record-keeping tools). ✔ Ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with learners, colleagues and external stakeholders.
✔ Strong organisation and record-keeping abilities.
