Roofer (Level 2) Apprenticeship
About the Role
As an apprentice, you will learn all aspects of roofing including slating, tiling, felt and battening, roof repairs, lead work, and solar panel installation. You will gain hands-on experience using tools including disc cutters and nail guns while working alongside experienced roofers on new builds and commercial projects.
Wage
- £16,640 to £26,436.80, depending on your age
- National Minimum Wage
- Minimum wage rates (opens in new tab)
- Pay is dependent on age and experience, in line with apprenticeship wage guidelines. Any pay increases will be discussed individually as the apprenticeship progresses, based on performance and skill development.

- 8:00am–4:30pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break
- 40 hours a week
- Hours may be set by your mentor and could vary, including occasional earlier starts or later finishes. Days TBC.

What You'll Do at Work
- Learn all aspects of slating and tiling roofing
- Assist with felt and batten installation
- Help install solar panel roofing systems
- Use hand and power tools including nail guns and disc cutters
- Work safely at height following health and safety procedures
- Load and unload roofing materials and equipment
- Work alongside experienced roofers on new builds and commercial projects
- Keep work areas clean, organised, and safe
- Attend college and complete apprenticeship coursework and training

Course Contents
- Work safely and be aware of key health, safety, and welfare issues
- Plan and carry out their work to commercial standards of quality and speed
- Move, handle, and store resources, complying with relevant legislation and guidance
- Interpret and follow verbal and written work instructions from trade supervisors and site managers
- Select the required materials and resources to carry out the work
- Set up, check, and operate plant and/or equipment
- Install related materials and components to a given specification
- Use, maintain, and store hand tools, power tools, and associated equipment
- Access, interpret, and follows drawings and specifications to carry out work
- Carry out a range of job tasks including measuring, marking out, fitting, finishing, positioning, and securing
- Install plain tiles, interlocking tiles, natural slates, and fibre-cement slates
- Install underlay, battens, and related roofing components
- Install pre-formed lead and/or proprietary flashings
- Install dry and wet fixed products to verges, hips, ridge, and valleys
- Install insulation and ventilation products for warm and cold roof construction
- Install roof windows and flashing kits
- Clean, dry, and prepare surfaces for specified system
- Install vapour control layers to prevent vapour coming through the building to protect insulation
- Install mechanically fixed and/or adhered insulation as required by the given specification
- Install reinforced bitumen, single-ply, and liquid applied waterproofing systems
- Terminate waterproofing systems at the perimeter upstands and/or open edges to the given specification
- Maintain and repair flat and/or pitched roofs (in excess of 10 degrees)
- Install perimeter details (edge trims, counter flashings termination bars)
- Work around outlets, pipes, soil, and vent fittings, safety systems, and roof lights
- Assess suitability of structure to receive cladding materials
- Install built-up, standing seam, secret fix, composite, and fibre-cement systems and rainwater goods
- Maintain, repair, and over-sheet existing roofs
- Install flashings, vents, fittings, and components as appropriate to the specification
- Work around penetrations and upstands

Training Schedule
- Training will take place both at work and at Cornwall College (St Austell).
- Apprentices will attend college for 4 consecutive days each month to complete the Level 2 Roofer Apprenticeship Standard.
- The remainder of training will take place on site, working alongside experienced roofers and gaining hands-on experience on domestic and commercial projects.

Other Requirements
- Must be reliable, punctual, and willing to learn.
- Able to work at height and in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to cope and be comfortable with physically manual work.
- Full UK driving licence is helpful but not essential.
- A positive attitude and strong work ethic are essential.
- Must be able to work well as part of a team and follow instructions.
- We are looking for an apprentice to work with our experienced roofer based in Bodmin, there will be requirements for you to travel all over Cornwall to work. A meeting point will be arranged, and you will travel to work with the experienced roofer.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will progress to a fully qualified roofer, capable of working independently on your own roofs. There are also opportunities to develop further within the company, including progression into trainee site supervisor or contracts manager roles, depending on performance and experience.
