SME Relationship Director (Full-time, Permanent)

Key Details

  • Location: Cardiff
  • Hours: Full-time, with a Hybrid Working model (1 day/week or 20% office attendance + 20% client-facing)
  • Salary: £85,493 – £100,580 per annum (competitive package available)

About the Role

At Lloyds Banking Group, we’re on a mission to shape the future of finance for good. We’re seeking a passionate and driven SME Relationship Director to join our high-performing Commercial Banking team, where you’ll build trusted, long-term relationships and drive growth for businesses from turnover £10m–£50m.

As the face of Lloyds for your clients, you’ll be the key advisor who understands their ambitions—designing tailored strategies and solutions that support their success while growing our bank’s income, balance sheet, and market share.


Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Client Portfolio Ownership:

    • Manage a defined portfolio of SME clients, offering seamless banking experiences across lending, deposits, payments, and day-to-day financial services.
    • Develop client strategies, identifying growth opportunities and providing industry-specific expertise.
  • New Business Growth:

    • Proactively identify and win new-to-bank opportunities, leveraging your network and market engagement skills.
    • Strengthen the bank’s presence in the Cardiff SME sector through strategic relationships and referrals.
  • End-to-End Service Delivery:

    • Collaborate with internal product specialists and coverage teams to deliver a joined-up service—connecting clients with expert solutions.
    • Act as a bridge between clients and the bank’s full capability, ensuring a holistic financial partnership.
  • Risk & Compliance:

    • Conduct lending assessments and structure financially sound solutions within Lloyds’ risk appetite.
    • Ensure all portfolio exposures align with credit policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Relationship Management:

  • Deep Understanding of the SME Market (especially in Cardiff)—who your seasoned contacts are, where opportunities lie, and how to bring them into the bank.
  • Creativity and Confidence in crafting bespoke solutions—balancing creativity with commercial acumen.
  • Risk-Savvy Decision-Maker: Handling proposal evaluations and negotiating terms with legal and credit expertise.
  • Boundary Spans:
    • Technical: Proficient in legal documentation and risk frameworks.
    • Interactional: Sharp communication for close-knit networks, stakeholders, and regulatory teams.
  • Stakeholder Focus: Ability to translate client needs into actionable banking strategies.
