Job Title & Overview

**NHS Band 3 – Tobacco Dependency Advisor (Smoking Cessation Team)

  • Salary: £25,760 – £27,476 per annum (Band 3)
  • Hours: Full-time (37.5 hrs per week)
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Location: Medicine Care group wards, Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust

Are you passionate about empowering individuals to make lasting lifestyle changes for better health and wellbeing? We are establishing a new Smoking Cessation service and require motivated, communication-focused candidates to support inpatients in their smoking-cessation journeys.

This role is vital in delivering a compassionate, evidence-based smoking cessation programme across our maternity, medical, and inpatient wards.


Role Purpose

As a Smoking Cessation Advisor, you will provide one-to-one support and guidance to help inpatients quit smoking. The role involves:

  • Working collaboratively with clinical and community teams to coordinate care paths for patients.
  • Education and outreach within the trust (e.g., smoking cessation roadshows for staff).
  • Ensuring patients receive effective, tailored support to overcome addiction and improve overall well-being.

Key Responsibilities

To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Deliver smoking cessation services to inpatients within Medicine Care wards under the supervision of a Band 4 Supervisor.
    • Conduct face-to-face assessments and provide personalised recommendations.
    • Report to the designated supervisor on a daily basis.

  • Establish strong relationships with:

    • Patients and their families/carers.
    • Multidisciplinary teams to ensure holistic care.
    • Clinical, community, and administrative staff to facilitate a seamless cessation journey.
  • Support the smoking cessation team with administration:

    • Logging patient interactions, progress updates, and tracking on electronic systems.
    • Entering data into local and national databases and updating relevant spreadsheets.
  • Train and educate healthcare providers on smoking cessation strategies via roadshows or other methods.

  • Coordinate transitions to community smoking cessation services post-inpatient care as required.

  • Work efficiently with digital tools:

    • Utilise Windows applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, system databases) for effective patient and administrative management.
  • Maintain professionalism across various settings, including unsociable hours if necessary.


Qualifications & Experience

Essential Requirements

✔ Standard GCSE/NVQ qualification level or equivalent. ✔ Customer care experience (preferably in an NHS/healthcare setting). ✔ Experience or skills in supporting individuals to overcome behavioural change. ✔ Basic computer proficiency (experience with digital databases, word processing, email, and spreadsheets).

Desirable

📌 Certification in NCSCT (National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training) Level 2. 📌 Familiarity with NHS software and trust environments ideal (training provided on specific systems). 📌 Background in smoking cessation or addiction recovery support.

✔ Self-motivation and ability to work independently with minimal supervision. ✔ Exceptional verbal and written communication skills when interacting with patients, teams, and colleagues. ✔ Time management and organisational skills, with the ability to adhere to deadlines. ✔ Empathy and patience – essential when delivering sensitive information and support. ✔ Attention to detail required for accurate data entry and coordination.
