As a Smoking Cessation Practitioner within the service you will be responsible for providing intensive behavioural support and advice to clients who want to stop smoking.
Main duties of the job
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated Smoking Cessation Practitioner to be part of the integrated smoking cessation service in the BCUHB area. You will positively influence smokers who want support to quit. As a Smoking Cessation Practitioner within the service you will be responsible for providing intensive behavioural support and advice to clients who want to stop smoking. You will work effectively with other clinical staff and the wider HMQ team to ensure patients receive pharmacotherapy to support their quit attempt.
You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills and experience of working with clients to make positive behaviour change. You will also have excellent organisational skills and be able to keep accurate, confidential client records. We are looking for someone who is willing to work flexibly and help shape development of the service. Further specific training in smoking cessation will be provided if required.
The role is fixed term to 31st March 2027 working mainly within the HMQ in Mental Health team across Gwynedd and Anglesey.

Qualifications/knowledge
Essential criteria
- Recognised professional qualification in health or social care eg RGN, Diploma in Counselling, CQSW or/and A Degree in a relevant subject Or/and equivalent level of previous experience
Desirable criteria
- Counselling qualification eg Certificate in Counselling, WNB Counselling Skills
- Health Promotion qualification eg Certificate, WNB Diploma, Open University

- Experience of providing client/patient centred services in a health or social care setting or Experience of health education / one to one counselling on health issues
Desirable criteria
- Experience in delivering specialist smoking cessation support to clients in a group setting
Aptitude And Abilities
Essential criteria
- Organisation and time management skills
- IT literate including Microsoft Office
- Record keeping – updating files on bespoke databases
- Ability to plan efficiently
- Good people skills
- Understanding of the principles and practice of client confidentiality
- Health related behaviour and change strategies
- Understanding of clinical governance systems and processes and the requirements of safeguarding policies and procedures
- Knowledge of local area
- Ability to speak Welsh
Desirable criteria
- Group work skills
- Ability to write reports producing clear communication of performance data
- Knowledge of health promotion theories and approaches, particularly behaviour change
- Knowledge of smoking cessation guidelines and practice and wider tobacco control policy
- Use of Quit manager
