Smoking Cessation Practitioner
🚬 Smoking Cessation Practitioner (Fixed Term/Secondment)
Role Overview
This fixed-term/secondment position lasts until 31st March 2027 to support staffing needs across the service. Prior permission from your current line manager is required if applying.
As a Smoking Cessation Practitioner, you’ll deliver intensive behavioural support and expert advice to clients seeking to quit smoking. Welsh is desirable for the role—applicants speaking English and/or Welsh are equally welcome.
Key Responsibilities
Client Support
- Provide intensive one-to-one support for individuals aiming to quit smoking within the BCUHB [Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board] area.
- Collaborate with clinical staff and Hospital Medical Quality (HMQ) teams to ensure patients access pharmacotherapy alongside behavioural guidance.
Service Development
- Use your motivation and expertise to positively influence smokers on their quit journey.
- Help shape service flexible working and development while maintaining accurate, confidential client records.
- Will be guided by mandatory smoking cessation training (provided by the service).
Environment
- Primarily based in Glan Clwyd Hospital, supporting the HMQ Hospital team.
- Fixed term until 31st March 2027.

Recruitment Criteria
Qualifications & Knowledge
Essential Criteria
- Professional qualification in Health or Social Care (e.g., RGN, Diploma in Counselling, CQSW) or a relevant degree/core level of healthcare experience.
Desirable Criteria
- Formal counselling, health promotion (e.g., diplomas from universities) or relevant behaviour change-qualifications.
Experience
Essential Criteria
- Proven experience in patient/client-centred services within health or social care settings.
- Experience delivering health education and/or one-to-one counselling on medical issues.

Desirable Criteria
- Prior experience in specialist group-based smoking cessation support.
Aptitude & Skills
Essential Criteria
- Strong organisation and time management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and IT (database records management).
- Understanding of client confidentiality GCCS and confidentiality laws.
- Awareness/services of clinical governance and safeguarding policies.
- Requires access to reliable personal transport.
Desirable Criteria
- Advanced group facilitation.
- Welsh language skills / willingness to learn.
- Experience writing performance reports summarising data.
- Knowledge of behaviour change theories + UK Careers Standards for Smoking Cessation, guidelines, and tobacco control.
Personal Values

- Ability to collaborate as an independent team player.
- Strong interpersonal influence, communication and flexibility.
- Ability to promote-confidence in evenings and weekends due to flexible scheduling.
Working Requirements
- Willingness to travel between sites—active transport and being a non-smoker or abstinent for over a year required.
