Job Overview
As a Smoking Cessation Practitioner within the integrated smoking cessation service in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) area, you will:
- Provide intensive behavioural support and advice to clients who want to stop smoking.
- Work effectively with clinical staff and the Health and Mental Wellness Qualifications (HMQ) team to ensure patients receive pharmacotherapy to support their quit attempt.
Links to exceptional interpersonal skills, patient behaviour change, excellent organisational skills, and rigour in record keeping are required. The role offers opportunities to contribute to service development, alongside additional training in smoking cessation support if required.
The fixed-term position lasts until 31/03/2027 and will primarily be based within the HMQ team across Gwynedd and Anglesey.

Main Responsibilities
Primary Duties:
- Deliver intensive behavioural support and guidance to clients aiming to quit smoking.
- Collaborate with clinical teams and HMQ staff to provide pharmacotherapy support.
- Ensure patient confidentiality and maintain accurate records.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of the smoking cessation service.
- Train in smoking cessation (as required).
Location & Flexibility:
- Fixed-term until 31 March 2027.
- Based primarily at HMQ in Mental Health (across Gwynedd and Anglesey).
- Requires access to transport and flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications (Essential)
Recognised professional experience or qualification in health/social care, such as:
- RGN (Registered General Nurse).
- Diagnostic Counselling (Diploma in Counselling or equivalent).
- CQSW (Children’s and Social Workers Qualification).
- (or) a relevant degree or equivalent experience.
Desirable
- Counselling qualification (e.g., Certificate in Counselling or Welsh Network of Bereavement Counsellors (WNB) Certificate).
- Welsh Network of Bereavement’s Health Promotion Certificate or Diploma or Open University equivalent.

Experience (Essential)
- Proven experience in client/patient-centred health or social care.
- Experience in health education or one-to-one counselling on health-related issues.
Desirable
- Experience in delivering specialist smoking cessation support in group settings.
Aptitudes & Abilities
Essential Criteria
- Strong organisation and time-management skills.
- Microsoft Office proficiency (including databases).
- Knowledge of Confidentiality Principles, safeguarding policies, and wider clinical governance.
- Local area knowledge.
- MBA Arabic: Ability to speak Welsh and non-smoking status (or smoke-free for over 12 months).
Desirable
- Skills in group facilitation.
- Experience in evaluating performance data through clear reporting.
- Knowledge of behaviour change theories and smoking cessation guidelines.

Other Essential Requirements:
- Willingness to travel between sites.
- Commitment to maintaining non-smoker status (or abstinent for over one year).
