Social Sustainability Coordinator
Location: Aberdeenshire or Inverness
At BAM, we're driving social sustainability with a Social Sustainability Coordinator to join our Scotland team. This role supports BAM’s objectives across three core areas:
- Social Mobility – promoting employment, education, and training opportunities
- Foundational Economy – investing in social enterprises, local businesses, and volunteering
- Social Inclusion – delivering community engagement and equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives
Work Context: This position is office/on-site (2+ days per week) + hybrid/remote support. Flexible working is encouraged to deliver meaningful impact in local communities.
About the Role
You will work closely across internal teams and external stakeholders, focusing on planning, delivering, monitoring, and reporting BAM’s social sustainability programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Delivery & Accountability ✔ Develop and align social sustainability strategies, targets, and Local Needs Analyses (LNAs) with client requirements, project objectives, and National Target Operating Models (TOMs) ✔ Support executive-level reporting on ** legislation, government guidance**, and social value methodologies (inputs, outcomes, impacts) ✔ Maintain up-to-date knowledge of social value regulations, sustainable procurement policies, and reporting frameworks
Programme Coordination ✔ Lead and deliver Social Mobility, Foundational Economy, and Social Inclusion initiatives, ensuring compliance with contractual social sustainability commitments ✔ Manage relationships with clients, communities, supply chain partners, voluntary/community sector organisations (VCSEs), and internal stakeholders ✔ Coordinate Local Needs Analysis (LNA) and project plans, identifying opportunities and risks for social value
Community & Supply Chain Engagement ✔ Promote local procurement – advocate spend with social enterprises, SMEs, and marginalised organisations to influence contracts and budgets ✔ Conduct social/economic/environmental risk assessments for supply chain partners; mitigate risks via performance targets and contract negotiations ✔ Collaborate with procurement/commercial teams to embed social value requirements in contracts

Innovation & Advocacy ✔ Support work-winning efforts (~LNAs, bid responses, case studies, social value content) ✔ Develop case studies and success stories to showcase the impacts of social sustainability initiatives ✔ Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by applying best practice and raising awareness across teams
Research & Data Analysis ✔ Stay current with emerging trends in social sustainability and share learnings across projects ✔ Gather, analyse, and report on social value performance data ✔ Quantify and qualify service delivery impact, producing reports for internal/external stakeholders
Person-Specific Requirements
Essential Attributes ✅ Proven understanding of social value drivers (legislation, industry, research) and its application in construction/construction procurement ✅ Stakeholder engagement & relationship management expertise – including client, community, and supplier relationships ✅ Knowledge of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) and its role in social value and stakeholder management ✅ Experience with Local Needs Analyses (LNAs) and National TOMs, identifying impact, risk, and opportunities ✅ Strong evidence required for tender/transactional submissions, including data collection, case studies, and performance reporting ✅ PROFILE CAPABILITY: Skilled in MS Office (particularly Excel for data analysis) and comfortable with data synthesis and reporting tools
Technical & Functional Expertise ✔ Insight into socially responsible procurement and prior experience negotiating contracts that embed social value/stakeholder goals ✔ Proficiency with TOMs, National Classification Standards, and other relevant legislative guidance
Communication & Influence ✔ Ability to inspire, engage, and influence at all levels/sectors ✔ Clear, persuasive written and verbal communications (essential for reporting and external advocacy)

Willingness & Mobility ✔ UK driving licence preferred – for on-site visits and regional travel (~UK & Ireland, ongoing) ✔ Ability to adapt to hybrid/remote hybrid working and maintain strong accountability through flexible arrangements
Qualifications & Experience
Ideal Profile 📜 A degree-level qualification (or equivalent experience) in social science, business, sustainability, or a related field 🔧 3+ years’ experience in roles directly supporting social value, sustainability, or community engagement, particularly in infrastructure or construction ⭐ Desirable Certifications (examples): ✔ Social Value International ✔ UK National TOMs certification ✔ Ch-Champ Certification ✔ MIXS/MM30 (local needs analysis frameworks)
