Social Sustainability Manager
Social Sustainability Manager – Scotland Team
About the Role
At BAM, we are currently recruiting for a Social Sustainability Manager to join our Scotland team, based in either Aberdeenshire or Inverness.
In this role, you will lead and support the delivery of BAM’s social sustainability initiatives, including:
- Social Mobility – promoting employment, education, and training opportunities
- Foundational Economy – supporting investment in social enterprises, local businesses, and volunteering activities
- Social Inclusion – delivering community support programmes and equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives
Working closely with both internal and external stakeholders, you will help plan, promote, deliver, monitor, and report on BAM’s social sustainability commitments and impact.
The role offers a blend of office-based, home-based, and project site working, with flexible hybrid working arrangements supported to help achieve a positive work-life balance.
Key Responsibilities
Social Sustainability Management
- Acts as a subject matter expert, promoting the strategic importance of social sustainability with stakeholders
- Applies and advises on social value frameworks, measurement tools, and industry best practice
- Keeps abreast of policy, research, and developments, sharing insights to drive improvement
- Develops social value opportunities across stakeholders and partners, managing risks
Strategy and Planning
- Leads the development and delivery of social sustainability plans, aligned with National TOMs (Themes for Change), client requirements, and BAM objectives
- Delivers initiatives across:
- Social Mobility
- Foundational Economy
- Social Inclusion
- Supports regional strategies, working groups, events, and communication activities
Compliance and Assurance
- Develops and applies policies, procedures, and reporting processes to ensure compliance with business requirements and best practice
- Oversees documentation, assurance processes, and project reporting standards
Stakeholder Management
- Develops stakeholder mapping, engagement, and communication plans
- Builds and manages strategic partnerships to enhance social impact, reputation, and opportunities
- Supports engagement with disadvantaged and underrepresented groups, including Diversity Impact Assessments

Community Engagement
- Coordinates stakeholder engagement and communication activities, collaborating with marketing and communications teams
- Develops meaningful partnerships with community organisations and stakeholders
Socially Responsible Procurement
- Integrates social sustainability principles into procurement, contract, and supply chain processes
- Supports suppliers and subcontractors in improving social value performance and maturity
- Ensures compliance with legislation, certification schemes, and ethical standards
Work Winning
- Supports bids and tenders through case studies, local needs analysis, and strong tender responses
- Represents BAM in client presentations, interviews, behavioural assessments, and early engagement activities
Diversity & Inclusion (D&I)
- Champions D&I across projects, teams, clients, and supply chain partners
- Encourages collaboration on D&I initiatives, sharing resources and best practice
Research and Analysis
- Analyses performance data to inform strategy, planning, and client reporting
- Researches best practice, industry trends, and local drivers
Measure and Report Impact
- Manages the recording, monitoring, and reporting of social sustainability activities and outcomes
- Analyses quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate impact and inform decision-making
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you should bring:
- A deep understanding of societal, industry, and legislative drivers of social value
- Informed by thought leadership, best practice, and research in Social Sustainability
- Proven experience leading in a team environment, with strong management capabilities
- High energy, self-motivation, and initiative
- Previous experience in a similar role, applying social value and sustainability principles, including:
- Writing and delivering social value plans
- Leading performance measurement and reporting
- Ideally, a degree-level qualification (or equivalent)
- Experience in stakeholder management and community engagement
- Skills in managing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders
- A commitment to Diversity and Inclusion, particularly in social value and stakeholder management
- Knowledge of National TOMs and expertise in using social value assessment tools
- Demonstrable experience writing high-scoring tender responses and supporting submissions
- Strong organisation and time management skills
- Enthusiasm in inspiring, influencing, and engaging a broad range of stakeholders
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Alignment with BAM Values: sustainable, inclusive, reliable, ownership, and collaborative
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Previous cross-UK/I country travel experience (pass or willingness to obtain a full UK driving licence)
