Engineering Tech Lead – Node.js Architect (Contract, 3 Days/Week On-Site)

Sheffield, UK – Inside IR35
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Engineering Tech Lead – Node.js to lead the design, development, and evolution of scalable, high-performance backend systems. The ideal candidate should possess:
- Deep technical expertise in the Node.js ecosystem
- Strong architectural and system design capabilities
- Proven experience leading engineering teams through complex challenges
This role requires a hands-on leader who can:
- Drive technical strategy
- Mentor engineers
- Establish best practices
- Architect distributed systems capable of handling enterprise-scale workloads
Experience & Eligibility
10–15+ years of software development experience, including:
- At least 5+ years of hands-on Node.js expertise
- Experience leading engineering teams
- Proven track record in large-scale backend platforms
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Lead the architecture, design, and development of mission-critical backend applications using Node.js.
- Design scalable, secure, and highly available distributed systems and microservices.
- Define engineering standards across projects and drive technical decision-making.

Team & Process Management
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Architects, DevOps, QA, and cross-functional teams.
- Mentor and guide engineers through technical challenges and career growth.
- Enforce code review best practices and ensure maintainability and performance.
System Optimisation & Security
- Optimise application performance, scalability, reliability, and observability.
- Implement system security, compliance, and data privacy standards.
- Design APIs and integration patterns for internal/external systems.
Operations & Technical Excellence
- Establish CI/CD pipelines and promote DevSecOps practices.
- Participate in production support, incident management, and root cause analysis.
- Lead technical discussions on architecture, system trade-offs, and technology adoption.
