Software Automation Engineer
Software Automation Engineer – South Yorkshire
£35,000–£50,000 DOE + Excellent Benefits
Rise10 Recruitment is exclusively partnering with a well-established engineering organisation to recruit an experienced Software Automation Engineer. Join a business specialising in cutting-edge automation and motion control systems for safety-critical industries.
Working on diverse, technically challenging projects, you’ll help design and build software controlling complex machinery across multiple sectors.
The Role
As a Software Automation Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the design, development, testing, and commissioning of PLC and HMI software for advanced automation systems.
Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, you’ll support projects from initial concept to commissioning, ensuring high-quality, safe, and efficient systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop PLC and HMI software for industrial automation
- Produce technical documentation, including:
- Functional Design Specifications
- User Requirements
- Cause & Effect documentation
- Develop scalable automation software using Structured Text and Ladder Logic
- Design machine network architectures and industrial communication systems
- Integrate software with electrical hardware, motion control systems, and distributed I/O
- Test, debug, and optimise automation software
- Commission systems in-house and at customer sites
- Support fault diagnosis and software improvements
- Ensure compliance with functional safety standards and best practice
- Work with Mechanical, Electrical, and Commissioning Engineers to deliver projects successfully

About You
A passionate Software Automation Engineer looking to make a real impact. We’re looking for someone with:
Required Experience & Qualifications
- HND or Degree in:
- Electrical Engineering
- Software Engineering
- Automation
- A related discipline
- Experience developing PLC-based automation software
- Strong proficiency with:
- Allen Bradley PLCs
- Rockwell Automation software
- Experience with:
- Studio 5000
- Logix Designer
- FactoryTalk View
- View Designer
- RSView SCADA
- Excellent knowledge of Structured Text and Ladder Logic programming
- Experience with:
- Motion control systems
- Variable speed drives
- Industrial networking
- Strong understanding of:
- Distributed I/O
- SCADA systems
- Machine control
- Hands-on experience commissioning industrial machinery in real-world environments
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams

- Experience with automation systems for:
- Cranes
- Lifting equipment
- Heavy industrial machinery
