An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Software Compliance Engineer to support the delivery of software compliance activities across advanced automotive vehicle programmes.
This role is responsible for ensuring that software development and update processes comply with global automotive regulations and industry standards, with a particular focus on Software Update Management Systems (SUMS) and Over-The-Air (OTA) update requirements. Working closely with engineering, homologation, cybersecurity, and programme teams, the successful candidate will support the implementation of compliant software strategies throughout the vehicle lifecycle.
The position requires a strong understanding of automotive software architectures, regulatory frameworks, and type approval processes, combined with excellent stakeholder management and documentation skills.
Responsibilities
Software Compliance & Regulatory Management Lead and maintain software compliance activities across multiple vehicle programmes. Develop and maintain Software Update Management System (SUMS) processes and supporting documentation. Ensure software development and update activities comply with applicable automotive regulations and standards. Interpret evolving regulatory requirements and translate them into practical engineering and programme actions. Monitor industry developments and advise stakeholders on potential impacts to current and future programmes. Software Update & OTA Strategy Support the implementation and governance of Over-The-Air (OTA) software update strategies. Establish and maintain software update procedures and lifecycle controls. Ensure software releases and update mechanisms align with regulatory requirements and internal processes. Support risk management activities relating to software updates and vehicle cybersecurity. Type Approval & Homologation Support Prepare and maintain regulatory submissions and supporting evidence for software-related approvals. Support homologation activities and ensure compliance documentation is available for regulatory reviews. Liaise with certification bodies, approval authorities, and internal stakeholders to support successful programme approvals. Maintain audit trails and compliance records throughout the vehicle lifecycle. Risk Assessment & Validation Conduct software compliance risk assessments and support mitigation activities. Support verification and validation activities to ensure software updates meet regulatory and technical requirements. Work with software, systems, and cybersecurity teams to identify vulnerabilities and ensure appropriate controls are implemented. Cross-Functional Collaboration Software Engineering teams Systems Engineering teams Cybersecurity teams Homologation and Certification teams Programme Management teams IT and Connected Services teams Support internal and external audits relating to software compliance. Provide guidance to engineering teams on software regulatory requirements and best practices. Qualifications

Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related discipline (2:1 or above preferred). Strong understanding of automotive software development processes and product lifecycle activities.
Essential Skills
Proven experience in automotive software compliance, homologation, or type approval activities. Strong knowledge of: UN R156 (Software Updates) Software Update Management Systems (SUMS) OTA update strategies and software lifecycle management Understanding of automotive software architectures and ECU-based systems. Knowledge of vehicle communication networks including: CAN Automotive Ethernet Diagnostic protocols Familiarity with: Secure software development practices Secure boot mechanisms Software verification and validation processes Software configuration management principles Ability to interpret complex regulations and convert them into actionable compliance requirements. Experience conducting software risk assessments and managing compliance workstreams across multiple programmes. Strong analytical and problem-solving capability. Excellent written communication skills with experience producing technical documentation and regulatory submissions. Strong stakeholder management and presentation skills. Ability to communicate technical and regulatory concepts to both engineering and non-technical audiences. Experience interfacing with certification bodies, approval authorities, and cross-functional engineering teams. Proficiency with: Microsoft Office applications Document management systems PLM/PDM environments Compliance and configuration management tools Understanding of automotive diagnostics protocols such as OBD and UDS. Awareness of functional safety principles and ISO 26262. Knowledge of quality management systems such as IATF 16949 and ISO 9001. Desired Skills
Knowledge of additional global regulatory frameworks and international type approval requirements. Familiarity with connected vehicle services, telematics systems, and OTA backend infrastructure. Project management experience or formal project management qualifications. Understanding of cybersecurity regulations and their interaction with software compliance activities. Knowledge of emerging software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures. Awareness of UN R155 Cybersecurity Management Systems (CSMS) requirements.

Experience
Previous experience supporting software compliance activities within the automotive sector. Experience implementing or maintaining Software Update Management Systems (SUMS). Experience supporting software type approval or homologation activities. Exposure to connected vehicle technologies and software update ecosystems. Experience working with software engineering and cybersecurity teams throughout the development lifecycle. Experience managing regulatory documentation and audit activities. Experience working within OEM, Tier 1, or complex engineering environments. Exposure to low-volume, premium, or high-performance automotive programmes is advantageous. Experience implementing UN R156 compliance strategies for vehicle programmes. Experience with ERP systems and engineering release processes. Experience working within Agile development environments.
