Software Developer/ Architect

Technology Architect – Digital Platforms Run & Change
Department: Digital Platforms Run and Change Location: Onsite (2 days/week) and Hybrid
About the Role
We create meaningful, life-enhancing experiences through technology, removing barriers that limit access to public services. Our Technology Architect will design and deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions that shape the future of digital public services.
This role sits within Digital Platforms Run & Change, responsible for maintaining and evolving a varied portfolio of platforms—some hosting customer-facing services, others orchestrating end-to-end digital journeys. As the Architect, you will:
- Shape technical direction across our platforms
- Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, delivery teams, and technical partners
- Ensure solutions meet scalability, security, and governance requirements
Key Responsibilities
Your work will have direct impact—build and refine systems that enhance public service delivery. You’ll handle:

Design Leadership
- Transform business needs into technical blueprints that excel in performance, security, and user experience.
- Partner with product owners, developers, and testers to navigate technical trade-offs.

Collaborative Assurance
- Lead design workshops and translate complex requirements for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Facilitate reviews and governance checks in tandem with security, data, and platform specialists.

End-to-End Ownership
- Guide teams across build, testing, deployment, and change management.
- Ensure architecture alignments to expansion, legacy migration, or compliance needs.
- Continuously refine architecture based on performance principles and test-outcomes.

Proactive Risk Mitigation
- Highlight and resolve risks early, aligning decisions with alignment and scalability whilst minimising operational overhead.
Deliverables & Outputs
The architecture outcomes you’ll lead and review include:
- Detailed architecture blueprints (documentation + diagrams)
- Technical insights for initiation, estimation, and risk predictions
- Technical assurance outputs from design reviews and governance walkthroughs
- Supporting guidance for delivery teams during build and deployment
- Adaptive design packs at milestone checkpoints to reflect evolving requirements
Dependencies & Assumptions
You’ll leverage and draw from existing resources such as:
- Insights provided by technical and architectural standards
- Engagement with security, data, and platform teams (including governance review)
- Technical documentation (legacy to SDLC to modern tooling)
Required Skills & Experience
General Skills
- Hands-on technical architecture expertise, with a track record of delivering high-quality design artefacts that satisfy both business and engineering goals.
- Proven ability to translate varying requirements (code-free to technical deep-dives) into cohesive designs.
- Experience producing comprehensive architecture documentation, including visual maps, flowcharts, and use-case analyses.
- Confidence guiding and interacting with technical teams, product owners, and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
- Clear and concise writing skills—your documents should convey critical reasoning and rationale cohesively.

Core Technical Skills

| Backend Dinamics | Server-side engineering experience—scaling, escape hatches, and async workflows. |
Platform & Infrastructure Expertise
A robust skillset in cloud-native tooling:
- Containerisation: Docker expertise and handling cruft-free workloads.
- Orchestration: Hands-on Kubernetes deployment, health checks, upgrades, and auto-scaling.
Domain/Architecture Knowledge
- Familiarity with IASS architecture principles, particularly in contexts akin to Identity Access Management or advanced secure-service scenarios.
- Exposure to (or strong alignment with) OAuth2 and related tech in UK Government Digital Service (GDS) compliant environments.
Qualification: Must hold a current Security Cleared status (SC clear level equivalency) or be eligible to achieve it rapidly within the hiring timeline.
