Amazon Ads Full-Stack Software Development Engineer Location: Edinburgh, Scotland
Amazon Ads is seeking a full-stack Software Development Engineer to join the Reach Extension team. Here, you'll help build innovative advertising products aimed at reaching and engaging millions of Amazon customers across their entire journey. Our diverse team collaborates globally, balancing frontend development in React and TypeScript with backend expertise in Kotlin and AWS, plus emerging technologies like machine learning (ML) and generative AI.
In this role, you’ll take ownership of the entire product lifecycle—from technical design and implementation to operational support—while driving performance, accuracy, and reliability at global scale, 24/7. Your impact comes through intuitive product innovation, fostered by teamwork, iteration, and a data-driven approach to solving problems.
About the Role
- Technology Stack: React, TypeScript, Kotlin, Elasticsearch, AWS services
- Ideal for: Engineers passionate about both frontend-facing engineering and scalable backend architecture
- Impact: Direct influence on advertiser success and the user experience of Amazon’s advertising ecosystem
Key Responsibilities
- Build and scale core features from conception to deployment, ensuring high availability, performance, and security
- Frontend & Backend Owner: Design, implement, and operate customer-facing features using React/TypeScript (frontend) and Kotlin/Java/Spring Boot (backend)
- Infrastructure & Tools: Leverage AWS services (EC2, Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, Kinesis) and Elasticsearch to build scalable systems
- Data & AI Integration: Work with machine learning models and generative AI tools to improve advertising relevance and results
- Customer Alignment: Collaborate with marketing teams, product managers, and UX designers to distill customer needs into technical solutions
- Iterate & Optimise: Continuously improve testing practices, automation, architecture, and user experience based on feedback and business growth
- Operational Excellence: Own end-to-end systems reliability, including performance monitoring and debugging prod environments

Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- Deep expertise in at least one modern language (e.g. Java, C++, C#, Kotlin, Scala)
- Demonstrated object-oriented design skills
- Full-stack awareness with portfolio showcasing both client- and server-side code
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent) (e.g. software engineering, IT)
- Experience with full software development lifecycle:
- Coding standards, code reviews, version control (Git)
- Build processes, unit testing, integration testing
- Deployment practices (CI/CD) and operability (e.g. observability, metrics), including experience scaling globally
- Love of scale and reliability with a background that showcases handling millions of requests, Latency sensitive systems, or distributed architectures
- Open-Source Contributions (GitHub, patches to libraries) or knowledge of industry best practices
Work Environment & Culture
- Primarily remote (90%) with regular travel (30%) to Edinburgh Office & Amazon xChange events, Livestreamed stand-ups improve synchronicity
