Role: Software Engineer (Back End, APIs, AI)
Location: Manchester (2 days per week)

A fantastic new Software Engineering opportunity exists with a leading eCom marketplace with one of the best engineering teams in Manchester.
Working within a back end focussed product team, you'll play a key part in helping build and evolve the APIs, services and data platforms that sit at the heart of a modern, cloud-native technology ecosystem, whilst contributing across the full software development lifecycle.
The role (responsibilities & goals)
As a Software Engineer, you'll design, build and operate reliable software that enables critical business data to flow seamlessly across multiple systems.
Working across backend services, APIs, event-driven architectures and cloud infrastructure, you'll collaborate closely with Product, Design and Engineering to deliver high-quality solutions that improve customer experiences and internal operational efficiency.
AND day-to-day you'll:
- Design, build and maintain scalable APIs, backend services and data processing pipelines.
- Contribute to front-end applications where required, working across the full technology stack.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers and designers to deliver customer-focused solutions.
- Develop using modern technologies including TypeScript, AWS and Docker.
- Champion engineering best practices including CI/CD, automated testing, observability and continuous delivery.
- Monitor, troubleshoot and improve the reliability and performance of production systems using modern observability tooling.
- Take part in pair programming, code reviews and collaborative design sessions.
- Take ownership of the services you build, helping shape technical direction and continuously improve the platform.
- Leverage AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Codex or Claude to improve productivity while applying sound engineering judgement.

Person requirements
We're looking for an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, building scalable systems, working collaboratively within high-performing teams and ideally bring experience in:
- Developing backend applications and APIs using TypeScript/Node.js, with exposure to or an interest in technologies such as Java, Kotlin or similar.
- Experience using AI-powered development tools (Claude, Codex) to enhance productivity and software quality.
- Strong experience building and operating solutions on AWS, with a good understanding of cloud-native services and architectural best practices.
- Experience provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code, ideally Terraform.
- Experience working with containerised applications using Docker, with exposure to orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes being advantageous.
- Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating with third-party services.
- Knowledge of distributed systems, event-driven architecture or systems integration.
- A passion for clean code, testing and software craftsmanship.
- A collaborative mindset with a curiosity for learning and continuous improvement.
