We're hiring on behalf of a major software provider to the UK public sector, for a software engineer to work on a modernisation project related to a financial platform.
The Role
This is a hands-on position at the intersection of legacy stewardship and modernization. You'll take ownership of a core collections platform built in Objective-J/Cappuccino, alongside a wider stack spanning.NET/C# (APIs and reporting), a JavaScript front end, and an iOS component. The organisation is moving aggressively toward a web-based SaaS model, with mobile retained specifically for field workers - so comfort operating across desktop, web, and mobile is essential.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Why This Role Exists
This part of the business has been running on legacy platforms that now need to be modernised. The result is a platform that's now reaching the limits of maintainability - and a real opportunity for someone to join the team to shape its transformation. You'll step into an environment with an existing embedded team already in motion. The long-term direction involves an expected move to Go-based microservices, aligning with the rest of the organisation's engineering strategy.

What We're Looking For
- Strong Objective-C/J background with experience on Cappuccino frameworks, ideally with polyglot experience
- Some Go or.NET exposure is a bonus, but not a dealbreaker for the right specialist
- Comfortable owning a technically diverse estate: legacy desktop, modern web, and mobile
- An engineer who can operate in a fast-moving, change-friendly environment and bring genuine energy to modernization work rather than just maintaining the status quo
