Overview

Stirling Dynamics is recruiting a C++ Software Engineer to join the Software & Electronics Hardware team.

Stirling Dynamics develops electro-mechanical and mechatronic systems and electronic hardware for the Aerospace and Training and Simulation markets. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Software Engineer to lead the delivery of safety-critical aerospace software and develop safety-critical embedded software for aerospace and defence applications. They will contribute both to customer projects as well as internal product design and development.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a small, highly capable engineering team, influencing technical decisions and software architecture.

This role will be predominantly based in the Stirling Dynamics Bristol office with occasional travel to our clients’ sites as required.

Due to security restrictions on some of the projects we work on, the ideal candidate will be a UK national.

Responsibilities

As part of the Software & Electronic Hardware team, the Lead Software Engineer is responsible for the delivery of GUI and embedded software packages across the organisation.

This role spans both technical leadership and hands-on delivery, including:

Technical Leadership

  • Mentorship and development of less experienced engineers
  • Leading technical delivery of software work packages and small engineering teams
  • Making decisions on key architecture and design
  • Supporting estimation, planning and technical risk management
  • Representing the Software discipline in customer reviews

Hands-on Engineering

  • Working directly with customers to understand requirements, presenting technical solutions and supporting project delivery
  • Development of embedded and GUI software (C/C++, RTOS)
  • Performing software verification and validation
  • Supporting certification activities (DO-178C, etc.)
  • Investigating and resolving complex technical issues
  • Working closely with electronic systems and electronic hardware engineers to define and implement integrated solutions

Essential skills

  • Working with requirements management tools (E.g. Doors, Jama, Polarion)
  • Experience in C and C++ programming languages
  • Proven skills in development of embedded software systems
  • Proficient in understanding, modifying, documenting, and improving legacy software packages
  • Development of software to interface and control hardware
  • Experience of the full software development lifecycle (requirements, design, implementation, integration, verification, and validation)
  • Ability to contribute to activities within a team environment including work package creation, task management, and delivery
  • Ability to operate across multiple projects simultaneously
  • Comfortable switching between consultancy and product environments

  • Programming in C#.net
  • PC GUI development using Visual Studio
  • Static code analysis e.g., MISRA C\C++
  • Unit testing – e.g. LDRA
  • Familiar with MATLAB/Simulink and associated toolboxes

Software Team leadership

Experience

We would expect candidates to have significant experience in:

  • Development of embedded software for high integrity\safety critical applications
  • Compliance with standards such as: DO-178C, IEC EN 61508 etc
  • Experience with programming applications in an RTOS environment
  • Leadership of small teams or technical work packages
