Software Engineer (Senior) – Glasgow/Edinburgh (Hybrid)

About the Role
We’re seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, architect, and deliver enterprise-grade, cloud-native applications using Java, Python, and modern frameworks. In a remote-first environment with occasional client site visits, you’ll lead technical delivery, shape architecture decisions, and mentor engineers to build scalable, secure, and high-quality solutions that meet evolving client and business needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect, design, and build scalable, high-performance applications using microservices, event-driven, and serverless patterns.
- Lead full-cycle software delivery on client projects by collaborating with distributed, multi-disciplinary teams.
- Translate business requirements into cloud-native, API-first, secure technical solutions.
- Mentor and lead engineers, fostering technical growth and improving delivery quality.
- Influence architecture, tooling, and technology adoption in fast-paced agile environments.
- Implement DevSecOps best practices, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and automated testing.
- Ensure end-to-end application observability (logging, tracing, metrics) from design to production.
- Provide post-delivery warranty support (12 months) to ensure system stability and facilitate knowledge transfer.

Required Skills & Experience
Technical Expertise
- 5+ years as a commercial software engineer, with leadership experience in complex delivery environments.
- Core Languages: Strong Java, JavaScript, and/or Python, with proficient testing and performance optimisation skills.
- API Development: Experience with REST, GraphQL, gRPC, OpenAPI/Swagger, and API Gateway design.
- Cloud Expertise: Deep expertise in AWS (Lambda, ECS, EKS, API Gateway, RDS, DynamoDB, SQS/SNS), plus familiarity with Azure/GCP equivalents.
- Databases: Advanced SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, DynamoDB, Cassandra).
- Architecture Patterns: Knowledge of microservices, hexagonal/clean architecture, event-driven, CQRS, and Domain-Driven Design (DDD).
- Messaging & Streaming: Familiarity with Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS Kinesis, or Azure Event Hubs.
- DevOps & Platform Engineering:
- Containerisation: Docker, Kubernetes (EKS/AKS/GKE, OpenShift)
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Helm
- CI/CD: Proven experience with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Argo CD.
- Security:
- OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, encryption, secrets management, and secure coding standards.
- Observability: Experience with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK stacks.
