About The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Software Engineer to join our Sustaining Engineering team at Canonical. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on Linux-based software-defined infrastructure and applications that span the entire technology stack. You will be responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving complex issues related to Ubuntu and its ecosystem, including kernel, storage, networking, virtualization, and containerization technologies such as Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, Docker, and LXC/LXD. Your contributions will directly impact the stability, security, and performance of Ubuntu, which is relied upon by millions worldwide. This position is remote, allowing you to collaborate with a diverse, global team, and participate in upstream community projects, ensuring open source software remains robust and reliable. The role is ideal for a technologist with a passion for Linux, open source development, and problem-solving at all levels of the software stack.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess professional experience as a software engineer with a strong background in computer science or related STEM fields. You should have extensive experience working with Linux operating systems and proficiency in at least one of the following cloud and open source technologies: Ceph, OpenStack, Kubernetes, or similar. Demonstrated development skills in Python, Go, C, or C++ on Linux are essential, along with the ability to troubleshoot using debugging tools like gdb. Familiarity with source code management systems such as git, and experience in reviewing code contributions, are highly valued. An exceptional academic record and the willingness to travel up to four times annually for team events and conferences are preferred. Additional skills that are advantageous include experience with QEMU/KVM, distributed systems, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Debian packaging, and a genuine enthusiasm for technology and open source communities.
Responsibilities
- Resolving complex customer issues related to Ubuntu and its ecosystem, including the kernel, storage, and cloud platforms.
- Working closely with Canonical’s field support and product engineering teams to diagnose problems, develop bug fixes, and implement upstream patches.
- Collaborating with open source communities, contributing to upstream projects, reviewing code, and ensuring that fixes are incorporated into Ubuntu releases.
- Managing your workload effectively, prioritizing tasks, and demonstrating sound technical judgment.
- Participating in team discussions aimed at improving internal processes, tools, and documentation.
- Maintaining clear, concise, and technical communication to facilitate effective collaboration.
- Occasional international travel for team meetings, conferences, and strategic events.
