Software Engineer

Software Engineer – Strategic UI Development

About the Role

Join us at Barclays as a Software Engineer, where you’ll design, develop, and enhance software that delivers key business and technology capabilities across our organisation. In this role, you’ll help build a new strategic UI using standard design libraries and accessibility principles, creating reusable components that support future platform enhancements.


Responsibilities

Core Development & Delivery

Develop and improve software solutions leveraging industry-aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensure code is:

  • Scalable
  • Maintainable
  • Optimised for performance

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Work cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and engineers to define software requirements, solution strategies, and integrate with business objectives
  • Participate in code reviews and foster a culture of code quality
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and contribute to organisational growth

Security & Quality Assurance

  • Adhere to secure coding practices
  • Implement unit testing best practices

Technical Leadership & Growth (Assistant VP Expectations)

  • Lead complex tasks and coach teams to drive business impact
  • Lead collaborative assignments, guiding teams and identifying cross-functional approaches
  • Deliver on performance objectives and conduct performance appraisals
  • Align stakeholders, resolve escalated issues, and consult on critical decisions
  • Mitigate risk, develop policies, and improve controls
  • Collaborate across business/functions to drive change and alignment

Risk Identification & Innovation

Analyse data from internal and external sources to solve problems creatively Communicate complex or sensitive information effectively Influence stakeholders toward key outcomes

Critical Technical Skills

  • API and microservices (REST/gRPC) – Design/implement production-ready services
  • Proficiency in Java with Spring Boot for enterprise-scale applications
  • Event-driven architecture experience, particularly Kafka
  • Strong understanding of DevOps & CI/CD pipelines (track record using GitLab preferred)

Highly Valued Qualifications

Banking/financial services experience preferred Experience collaborating with cross-functional, global teams Knowledge of infrastructure vulnerabilities and deployment optimisation

This remote/hybrid position may include onsite days in Northampton.
