About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Software Engineer to join our Platform Engineering team. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable backend systems. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical vision of our platform, setting architectural standards, and mentoring engineering teams. Your expertise will help drive the adoption of best practices in engineering, ensure high-quality code delivery, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. As a recognized domain authority, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions that support Gymshark’s strategic objectives. Your leadership will be instrumental in elevating the engineering standards, streamlining processes, and ensuring the robustness of our technical infrastructure.
Qualifications
- Proven experience working as part of a high-performing software engineering team in a lead or senior contributor role
- Strong proficiency in writing production code in Golang or other strictly typed languages
- Extensive experience designing, implementing, and maintaining event-driven architectures
- Deep understanding of API design, including REST and GraphQL patterns
- Solid knowledge of software quality and testing practices, including unit, contract, and integration testing
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code in a production environment
- Database design expertise across relational and non-relational databases
- Demonstrable experience coaching and developing engineers
- Proven ability to influence technical strategy without direct authority
- Excellent communication skills and leadership qualities, with a pragmatic, get-things-done attitude

Responsibilities
- Design and document clear architectural diagrams and key decision records accessible to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ensure the team adheres to best engineering practices, promoting knowledge sharing and adopting emerging tools and methodologies
- Enforce quality standards and testing best practices from design to production
- Communicate the value of addressing technical debt to stakeholders and facilitate its iterative resolution
- Lead the development of scalable backend services utilizing Event Driven Architecture and AWS Serverless technologies such as Lambda, EventBridge, SQS, and DynamoDB
- Design and build APIs (REST & GraphQL) that support customer-facing features
- Handle complex technical challenges under pressure, including leading on critical incidents
- Delegate low-risk technical decisions and own high-risk decisions, ensuring risk mitigation
- Embed CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code as fundamental practices across all projects
- Collaborate with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and Engineering Managers to optimize team output and impact
- Create an empowering environment where engineers can own and deliver their work effectively
- Mentor and support engineers’ growth through coaching, learning opportunities, and knowledge sharing
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous feedback, and technical excellence
- Set and communicate a clear technical vision and architectural direction for the team
- Influence technical strategy and cross-team practices through trust, judgment, and effective communication
- Build strong peer relationships with other lead engineers, sharing knowledge and raising platform engineering standards
- Propose and secure buy-in for projects that contribute to Gymshark’s long-term technical and business goals
