Software Engineer (Embedded)
Software Engineer (Embedded Systems) – Product Software Team
About the Role
The product software team at Huber + Suhner Polatis develops customer-facing software for our industry-leading all-optical network switch. The team manages two distinct software stacks on separate PCBs:
-
Network Software (NIC SW)
- Implements L2/L3 protocols for switch communication.
- Enables interfaces such as TL1, Netconf, Restconf, and WebUI to facilitate customer interaction.

Control Software (DSP SW)
- A bare-metal stack processing user commands via NIC SW.
- Controls piezoelectric actuators for precise movement and positioning.
In this Software Engineer role, you’ll contribute to enhancing and optimising products by focusing on software architecture, design, and integration. Collaboration across cross-functional teams is essential to drive product excellence and team efficiency.
Responsibilities
System Design & Architecture
- Contribute significantly to feature enhancements in the existing codebase, working alongside software architects and team leads.
- Develop and document low-level design specifications aligned with the product architecture.
Firmware Development
- Develop, debug, and optimise bare-metal firmware for ARM-based microcontrollers.
- Ensure efficient, reliable operation of embedded systems in performance-critical applications.
Hardware Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with hardware engineers to:
- Review schematics.
- Develop and debug hardware drivers.
- Ensure seamless integration between hardware and software stacks.

Interface Implementation
- Implement and optimise:
- Low-level device interfaces (UART, SPI, GPIO, ADC, DAC, I2C).
- Communication protocols between peripherals and microcontrollers.
System Testing & Validation
- Utilise advanced diagnostic tools and test equipment to:
- Validate and troubleshoot embedded systems.
- Ensure high-quality, reliable performance.
Agile Development Participation
- Active involvement in Agile processes, including:
- Sprint planning.
- Daily stand-ups.
- Generation and maintenance of process artifacts.
- Retrospectives to refine workflows.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify inefficiencies in systems and workflows.
- Propose and implement innovative solutions to drive forward progress.
Documentation
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including:
- Design specifications.
- Code documentation.
- System functionality details.
Profile Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- 3+ years in the embedded systems industry, with expertise in:
- ARM-based microcontroller development.
- Bare-metal systems, crossing hardware-software domains.
- Proficiency in:
- Embedded C for writing performance-critical code.
- Skill in debugging using:
- JTAG, ICE, logic analysers.
- Experience:
- Reading and interpreting hardware schematics.
- FPGA design familiarity.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to resolve firmware/hardware issues.
- Hands-on knowledge of:
- Low-level device interfaces (flash, SPI, UART, GPIO, ADC, DAC, I2C).
- Optimalising communication protocols between peripherals and microcontrollers.
- Proficiency in scripting (Python or Bash) for:
- Automating tasks.
- Testing scripts.
- Build processes optimisation.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) for:
- Collaborating in cross-functional teams.
- Presenting technical information.
- Documenting project progress.

Desirable Attributes
- Knowledge of motion control systems.
- Experience in Agile environments, improving process artifacts and development methodologies.
- Familiarity with secure boot techniques and HW Root of Trust.
- Knowledge of attestation mechanisms.
- Degree-level education in a numerate discipline with embedded programming focus.
