Software Engineer – Linux Platform / Operating Systems Development
A world-leading European secure video communications technology company is seeking a Software Engineer or Senior Software Engineer to join their highly engineering-led platform team. The role focuses on Linux operating systems development, Linux distributions, open-source technologies, virtualisation, containers, and the ongoing development of their internal Linux-based OS platform.
Role Details
- Position: Software Engineer or Senior Software Engineer
- Location: Remote within the UK or hybrid from Reading with occasional travel to Reading
Key Skills Required
- Strong experience with Linux operating systems, Linux distributions, and operating system fundamentals.
- Experience maintaining, developing, or extending Linux-based platforms or distributions.
- Proven track record of open-source contributions, ideally across Linux distributions, systems tooling, package management, or platform-level projects.
- Solid low-level software engineering experience, with an understanding of how systems behave close to the OS layer, and Linux Kernel.
- Experience debugging software written in languages such as C, Python, or Rust.
- Good knowledge of computer networking fundamentals.
- Experience using Python to automate system administration tasks on Linux-based platforms.
- Experience with virtualisation technologies such as VMware or KVM.
- Experience with containerisation technologies such as Docker or Podman.
- Familiarity with Linux package management systems such as Dpkg or RPM would be highly beneficial.
- Experience developing scalable, secure systems and platforms.
- Exposure to system deployment across AWS, GCP, or Azure would be useful.

What You'll Do
- Develop, maintain, and improve a Linux-based operating system platform used across core products.
- Provide secure virtual machine and container images for product engineering teams.
- Extend Debian / Linux operating system functionality to meet new platform and product requirements.
- Support the security, reliability, and maintainability of software running on the platform.
- Improve compatibility across a growing range of cloud providers, hypervisors, and deployment environments.
- Provide low-level engineering support to other software teams.
- Work closely with engineers across the UK and Norway, sharing responsibility for continuous platform improvement.
- Contribute to CI, test automation, and engineering best practices within a quality-focused environment.
- Investigate complex system issues and help drive robust, maintainable technical solutions.
