Software Engineer – Materials Management
You will be based in our Cambridge office, working as part of an agile team of experienced and dedicated software engineers contributing to the Materials Management service. As a cloud-only SaaS solution that provides management and identification of material and substance definitions, this service forms a strategically important role and underpins a great many of the workflows and capabilities supported by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
The Materials Management service is part of a growing suite of cloud-based scientific software solutions that the BIOVIA brand (Scientific Software: Accelerate Your Scientific Innovation | BIOVIA - Dassault Systèmes) is developing, delivered by a talented group of software professionals located in Europe, United States and Asia. You’ll be joining the team at an exciting time as we transition from initial Go Live through Minimum Viable Product and ultimately to the best in class solution for our customers.
Role Description & Responsibilities
- Architect Server-Side Solutions: Design, implement, and maintain highly scalable backend services and APIs using Java and modern JavaScript ecosystems
- Drive Product Evolution: Build out a broad set of new backend features enabling complex scientific workflows in entirely new business areas
- Champion Continuous Delivery: Shape project roadmaps, ensuring deep test coverage and a highly maintainable, resilient codebase
- Innovate & Modernise: Proactively research and introduce cutting-edge backend tools, design patterns, and engineering practices to the team
- Optimize Cloud Architecture: Enhance data processing pipelines, concurrency models, and multi-tenant capabilities for public and private cloud deployments
- Elevate Code Quality: Lead and participate in rigorous peer reviews, ensuring a clean, robust, and maintainable codebase

Qualifications
We are looking for a dedicated backend or server-side specialist. While we value full-stack adaptability, your core passion and expertise lie in building rock-solid server-side logic and scalable APIs. If you already have many of the following attributes and are excited to learn the rest, we would love to hear from you:
- Education: Degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a related scientific/engineering discipline
- Server-Side Expertise: Strong commercial experience developing backend applications using Java and/or JavaScript / TypeScript
- API Design: Proven experience building secure, backward-compatible, and high-performance RESTful APIs for large-scale SaaS environments
- Testing Excellence: Passionate about quality, with experience using automated backend testing frameworks (e.g., JUnit, Mocha/Jest)
- Mindset: A strong sense of ownership, an agile mindset, and excellent English communication skills
- Experience working with RDF databases / graph databases and querying with SPARQL
- A passion or academic interest in materials science, chemistry, biology, or scientific informatics software
- Experience or familiarity with client-side development (Angular 21+, RxJS) to support full-stack collaboration when needed
